No one vulnerable at matchpoints, you deal and hold

and the auction goes 1-P-1NT-P-?

Assume you are playing 2/1, what are your top three choices? How close is it for you?

As a secondary question, what do you believe the bid of 2NT by you shows here?

Pass, your side has at most 25 points, you have terrible major spot cards, this is a misfit, and having a club void on this auction is not good.

In standard 2N shows 18-19, just reverse with this kind of hand and play partner's 2N/3C/3D are nonforcing.

I might try 2D at IMPs but this is matchpoints and so I would just pass, this kind of hand (where it's not clear what we have or if it's safe to attack clubs) is very hard to defend.

I would bid 2 at imps for sure, and maybe at matchpoints though Pass is a close second. I pay off to 3=3=2=5, with all other shapes we have a diamond fit (maybe even a 9-card fit) and a void.

edit: I didn't consider shapes like 3316, 3307. These make 2 a lot less attractive. Maybe Pass is right even at imps.

I think 2 is so obvious. So what if partner is usually long in clubs, he isn't always and I have a void! Also even though I don't consider it good enough to reverse we could still have game and find it over 2. But that's an aside, I just expect it to usually be a better contract than 1NT.

you get my vote. IMO passing 1NT is a give up bid when partner might find a 3 call over my 2 bid

Thanks for all the replies. This hand came up with a regular partner and there was some discussion post hand about whether 2NT could be bid with this hand if it were slightly stronger.

I thought 2NT would be at least 18 points and balanced, but my partner believed it could be bid on a much wider range of hands. How much flexibility do you think 2NT should have? Would you bid it with any unbalanced hands? Any 5422 shapes in 15-17 range that you chose not to open 1NT?
