I'm used to 3♠ forcing in this sequence, so for me a gameforcing 1-suiter in spades is impossible, but that is not standard. A gameforcing raise in diamonds is possible, though, since 3♦ and 4♦ would be NF. X would have been take-out as I play it, so the actual hand is not suited for a take-out double. Bid 3NT with a heart stopper, bids spades with some support, or otherwise make a descriptive bid. On this hand, 4♦ is the only reasonable call, although 3NT might be the winner. jdonn Posted August 11, 2010 Report Share Posted August 11, 2010 3NT is not even worthy of much consideration in my mind, given partner choosing cuebid instead of double which would be his more likely choice on hands that aren't short in hearts (unless he is just forcing to game in spades or diamonds anyway). Phil Posted August 11, 2010 Report Share Posted August 11, 2010 Partner didn't double, so I would expect a very offensive hand that can't handle 2♥ x'd. It could be something like a SJS in spades, or a hand with some great diamond support. Could it be a ♦/♣ two suiter? Isn't there some doubt about whether or not 3♣ is a forcing call by pard? 3♠ is wrong and 3N is out. 4♦ is normal but 4♣ would allow pard to show the diamonds at a lower level. MFA Posted August 11, 2010 Report Share Posted August 11, 2010 3♣ instead of 3♥ is nonforcing as I play it. I play all responder's simple balances in a new suit as nonforcing. But a jump to 4♣ would be forcing with a black twosuiter. All those bids are a grey area in standard. 3♥ is often an "ugly" hand with no clear direction. 4♦ is clear now. peachy Posted August 11, 2010 Report Share Posted August 11, 2010 If partner was interested in penalizing them or interested in 3NT, he would have doubled or bid NT. Particularly playing support doubles, it is not quite mandatory but close to it, to double with the 1S bidder's hand.
