Bet you're wishing you had just opened a weak two

Why would I wish I had opened a weak two?

If 4C is a splinter you can consider that, but it's a little on the weak side -- and in my system, splinters arent available in this auction (we play fit-jumps once there has been an overcall.) Just 4H is fine for me.

I play that opposite a third seat opener we are never in a forcing pass for any reason, so I would just pass 4S. If I bid 4C and we were in a FP then I would definitely just double 4S, but in that case I wouldn't agree with the previous action and would have just bid 4H.

If I bid 4 I would pass 4 spade.

I may hold 2 defensive tricks, but my partner won't hold 3, else he may had doubled himself, so the gains are small.

Of course, if he leads a club from x,Axxxx, xxx,AKxx, I may regret my pass.

Hi,

If 4C is a splinter, than just bid, for us 4C would be a fit-jump, so 4H it is.

You show your shape, to help p with the decision, what to do, if they compete

to 4S.

If 4S comes back, I would make a X, which has to be optional, but should

show a trump trick, together with the splinter, p has a pretty good picture, what

I have.

I would not have opned 2H, one reason the vul, the hand is slightly to weak for

a weak red. vs. green.

With kind regards

Marlowe

I wasn't actually suggesting that anyone (apart from OleBerg) would open a weak two - just that you wouldn't have any decisions to make later, and that you might well have kept oppo out of spades. I am also aware that many will play this as a fit-jump.

I am mainly interested in the judgement call of, having splintered, what the right thing to do over 4 is.

One thing for sure. I will never wish I had opened a weak two.

I think if you splinter then pass is in order. Your hand is for sure at lower end for splinter (if it qualifies at all) so no reason to do anything than pass imo.

I don't think anybody is seriously suggesting that partner's pass if forcing here.

If you choose 4 instead of splinter then x makes more sense as partne won't double himself with extras and they will be more likely to bid 4 on insufficient values after 4.

Why would partner double holding 3 defensive tricks opposite a preemptive raise? I don't get it...
