psyck
Ever since the Browser version of BBO was inaugurated, I have been using both Windows & Browser versions together. Both have their own pros & cons as already mentioned in earlier posts, so I just place both windows side by side on my monitor & make the best of both worlds by using whichever ones features I feel the need of at the moment (often both simultaneously, say when kibitzing open & closed rooms of vu gr). Until the Windows only features like GIB, Chat Log, Chat Room, Instantaneous refresh, Text to Voice, etc. are included in the Browser version, I do not expect to completely switch over. BCTR
May be technically new but the one you called 'new version'is not attractive and not better, than the 'original'i use the 'new one' just for renting robot thats all :) even i cannot concentrate the game because of bad graphics, management has to think older people using glasses and strugling to see the cardslike me
barmar
If you have problems with the card graphics, I suggest you switch to hand diagram mode.
Fluffy
I just discovered this thread. I didn't change to web because of change-aversion, having to find where the options I already know where they are in windows client is not something I want to do. Would like to know if I will be forced to change to web sometime, then I might start to get used to it since I will know I will have to do it sooner or later. I have though of changing because of some features like Gibs and some tourneys, but didn't bother me enough yet. The only real thing that bothers me is that between tourneys and tourneys when giving lessons I cannot start a teaching table because then the program will think I am on "another tourney" and not send me to the tourney I signed up in. Same for team matches. But I think the same happens on both clients.
psyck
Yes Fluffy, the Windows client will be scrapped in 2055, prepare to migrate by then.
pirate22
As an original user of windows.hated the new version-a question of navigation, but to listen to voice commentaries on Vu-graph another bonus.i downloaded the new version....Constructive critiscm---- at first did not realise you had to have downloaded FLASH,that took a long time to sort out..ok now i have the new version, but no icon.so that i have the choice.when starting my computer i would like both icons.with the new version i cannot acces forums.am i correct?and ply with new version in a tourney its a drag to profile my opponents, its a time waster,as compared to windows..coming back to windows so many features that are not present on the newer format..... I assume to update windows, the powers to be it cannot be done...but with the new version up and running, why not shut down windows for 1 week.and tweek it up....... most of us prefer WINDOWS
barmar
Most people already have flash, since it's needed for so most sites with video (like YouTube). If you want a desktop icon, go to www.bridgebase.com and click on "Download a shortcut to Bridge Base Online". Accessing the forum has nothing to do with which version of BBO you use. I'm not sure what you mean about profiling your opponents. Do you mean that you have to click instead of just moving the mouse over them? Go to Options -> More Options -> Advanced Options and select "Show profile upon mouse over" and then you will get the old style.
mgoetze
Most people already have flash, since it's needed for so most sites with video (like YouTube). This is not true, YouTube has not needed Flash for over 2 years now. Or did you literally mean "certain sites which are similar to YouTube but which are, in fact, not YouTube"?

According to http://support.google.com/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=95402All videos on YouTube are streamed through Adobe Flash Player.Hulu also uses Flash. barmar
Yes, I am: http://www.youtube.com/html5/That's a trial, the normal way to use YouTube is with Flash. And as far as I was able to tell, Hulu uses Flash as well -- when I googled for "hulu html5", all I could find were articles about Hulu's announcement 2 years ago that they didn't expect to adopt HTML5 any time soon. I think most other video sites are similar (except for the ones that use Windows Media, or the real oddballs that use Real Player).
mgoetze
Yes, a trial which has been going on for over 2 years and which a lot of people are automatically signed up for. But anyway my point stands - you don't need Flash to use YouTube. Of course I realise that Flash is a long way from being as dead as I'd like it to be. barmar
OK, so you're not disagreeing with my main point (that most video sites use it), just pointing out that I used a poor example.
Ethel
I use "old" version of BBO. I find everything I need or want. Tried to listen to a teacher on the new version the other day and the sound was terrible. Like the teachers that use the "radio" program. Also like the computer talking when I am "watching" plays. Cannot sit and look at a screen for ever - too hard on the eyes. Hope the Win program never disappears. Bingo is not a reason to change a program. There are bingo halls everywhere - go to one. You don't have to turn on the sound in a browser. You can't turn it on in the windows client. So browser is better than or equal on this issue. Both the browser and the windows client show the graphics on your computer screen. Browser and program equal. You don't have to play bingo on browser. Can't play it on client. Browser still better than or equal. So seems like it boils down to "I am not changing because it is different."
1eyedjack
So seems like it boils down to "I am not changing because it is different."The other poster might have worded it better, but it seems to me that the Windows client would not have such an adhesive following among such a large population of players if "I am not changing because it is different" were really the only explanation. Two that annoy me particularily:- Sound configurability- Proper support for Full Disclosure What is truly vexing, however, is that when you ask for feature parity in the "Suggestions for the Software" forum, the response is absolutely nil. I think the Web client would be doing much better if BBO Management showed some kind of commitment to making it as good as the Windows client as far as feasible... I think the Web client would be doing much better if BBO Management showed some kind of commitment to making it as good as the Windows client as far as feasible...Actually we have been totally committed to making the web-client significantly better than the Windows client since day 1. I would have thought that this would have been obvious.... For whatever it's worth, I feel quite strongly that we have already succeeded in this regard and the web client will certainly continue to improve. Yes, there are some areas in which the Windows client is still superior, but IMO there are many more areas where the web client has the advantage. I realize I am not exactly an objective observer, but neither is anyone else - people like what they are used to. We read all of the "Suggestions for the software" posts and it is far from rare for us to implement such suggestions. mgoetze
Hi Fred, thanks for answering. I have posted twice about the sound issue in the past 3 years and, apart from upvotes, received no other response than an aquaintance of mine emailing me that I should switch back to the Windows version. My gripe is this: The "card played" sound is very annoying, so I always switch off the sound when I am actually at a table, then forget to turn it back on when I leave the table, causing me to miss the all-too-quiet "plop" sound of someone sending me a private message. Being able to switch off the "card played" sound separately from the other sounds would already be a major improvement IMHO and surely not too much to ask? Ethel
I guess I did not make myself clear. I tried to listen to the vugraph announcers and a teacher on the Web version. The sound does not work well. I get things like....ma..car...cou...tr... Sounds like a cell phone going in an out of range. I was advised to get the lastest Flash- which I have and as I am a complete computer idiot - there was some advice about another browser. If I change something like that I will be in real trouble. The sound used to work - so something has changed on the program. I enjoyed listening to LC, but now can no longer hear it. The sounds the cards make etc, etc is not a big concern. I like the Windows program computer relating what someone is typing on the screen. It is helpful as I can work at something else and still be part of the program. 1eyedjack
The sound used to work - so something has changed on the program.I don't think that the conclusion logically follows from the premise. It is a possible explanation - one of many possibilities and frankly one of the least likely. Deliving the sound to your machine is a complex process involving many suppliers of services any one of which could perform well or badly from time to time. I use skype a lot, and it varies enormously in its performance and sound quality, but I don't assume that Skype have "done something" to reduce the quality when it deteriorates. I enjoyed listening to LC, but now can no longer hear it. The sounds the cards make etc, etc is not a big concern. I like the Windows program computer relating what someone is typing on the screen. It is helpful as I can work at something else and still be part of the program.Surely you get the same typed commentary on the screen if you use the flash version, even if there is a voice commentary available (which you can disable if the quality is unusable)? I realize I am not exactly an objective observer, but neither is anyone else - people like what they are used to.As someone who has never liked the windows client (and was away from BBO for years because of it), I actually dislike what I was used to. :) I keep it around anyway, though, because there are a few things that are just plain impossible with the web client. FWIW, if you can get to 100% feature parity I think many more people would be quite happy to be web-only.
barmar
It will never get to 100% feature parity, since there are some things in the old client that we think are simply wrong. Lobby chat will probably never be resurrected, even though people keep asking for it. But everything important should eventually find its way into the web client, it's just a matter of time. It may be a while, because now the person who would do that work is mostly busy on the mobile client, which is much further behind in feature parity.
