When they bid your long suit that means you have no source of tricks, and stuff will break badly (since LHO will be void or stiff in diamonds), etc etc. You also have a sure medium sized plus on defense. This is not even a trap pass, if partner is passing it out 100 % of the time I would still pass. Bidding and going -100 or -200 instead of +100 or +150 is a big swing, and is a common outcome. However, occasionally when we do make something it means partner has some values and obv has short diamonds, so they can reopen X. That is huge for us! Sometimes 800 sometimes 1100..who cares if it is 500 vs +620 in ♠ or whatever I score in 3nt??..the huge gains also come when it is +500 vs -100.
