kenberg
1C-(4H)-pass-pass4NT No previous discussion. I, in first position, opened 1C on a big hand (18 or 19 highs, I forget the exact hand) and 2=2=4=5 shape. 5C is a bit lucky but it comes home. Unfortunately we were not in 5C. Partner and I are, I think, both open to opinions on the meaning of 4NT. Partner's shape was 5=2=3=3.
aguahombre
I would have guessed 7-5 in clubs and diamonds......but were you in a strong club auction? A double by the club opener would probably have to do, with a random balanced or semi-balanced mountain. neilkaz
I'd play this as "pick a minor suit" but only on days ending in y. .. neilkaz ..
kenrexford
Without discussion, minors with longer clubs. With discussion, minors with longer clubs.
bluecalm
7-5 in clubs and diamonds 6+-4+ is enough for me. Something like: xx x AKJx AKQxxx
Free
2 suits, usually minors unless you have 6♣-5♥.
MickyB
2 suits, usually minors unless you have 6♣-5♥. You might decide to defend with that :D And yes, minors, but 4-5 is definitely not enough.

cherdanno
If you want to bid with 2245, then you should double, in case partner can pass. But the percentage action is probably a pass.
the hog
A big hand with the minors, but Clubs of course are longer.

kenberg
I think of this as two parts: What does the 4NT call mean, and should I have made it. Meaning: TO for the minors seems to be pretty much the consensus, with differing views about how shapely it has to be. Judgment: No one is enthusiastic about my dub-dub-4-5. I agree, and definitely 5C is a lucky make, but here are the hands as best i recall (no hand records, played a week or so ago, my memory is not remotely photographiic). Matchpoints, I don't recall the vul. [hv=d=s&n=skxxxxhxxdkxxcjxx&s=saxhkxdaqxxckqtxx]133|200|Scoring: MPSomething like this[/hv] W has a 3=7=1=3 shape including the AQ of hearts and the A of clubs. With spades splitting, clubs behaving and the board entry in diamonds I don't think they can stop me from taking four clubs, three diamonds ant four spades in 5C. But right, it's very lucky. And 4S played N is down 2 (heart-heart-club-heart should set up two spade tricks). OK, that's resulting. But do I really have to pass when 4H rolls back to me? I do have to worry about partner bidding 4S over a double, do i not? responding to a question: No, not a big club auction. Std 2/1 stuff w strong no trumps.
