Spingold Winners

Maybe 3Sx-3 was more exciting, but I thought Fred's play in 3D-1 was very strong and imaginative, and certainly there were no more than a handful of declarers in the Spingold capable of it, let alone actually finding it at the table. Congratulations Fred, very well played.

Congrats etc.

I wonder why Fred thought he needed a swing? I thought they had a decent set at his table. You wouldn't expect to lose often on the hand where slam made off two key cards, and they were in fact ahead apart from that hand.

For those who wondered like me: the hand is on page 2 of the Daily Bulletin no. 10:

Making 3 ...- the solution is very counter-intuitive. Its almost impossible to see the winning line even looking at all four hands at T5. None of the commentators spotted it, except Cohen (I think) who said "GIB thinks that 3 can be made at this point" (after Fred played a high club).

Can anyone run GIB or otherwise ascertain the winning line for a make at T5, after A of C is played, please? I don't see it.

And yes, North is 2-2-4-5, not as as shown. xx xx QJxx Qxxxx (no T of C.)

Poor Sontag he had ran a beautiful criss cross squeeze earlier and then missed this

He also missed simple (?) throw in before in the final as well as 100% line in the semis in game which Helgemo made.

Seems like he wasn't in the best shape this tournament or maybe bridge is just that hard...

Congrats to team Diamond, and especially to Fred, whose brainchild, BBO, enabled me to follow the event.

After Bd 62, there was a short break and commentator Larry Cohen made the following weirdly prophetic remark:

[boards] 63 and 64 look rather tame -- but I know the MELTZER team will wince, thinking I am cursing them.

At this point, foolishly believing his 'tame' characterization, my attention strayed and when I returned, Sonty had just gone -800. The commentators were aghast.

whats that saying its not over till its over...by Yogi Berra

I will always remember looking at the opening diamond lead checking Gib and seeing that at most is would be -200 to -110 at other table. Havig already kibbed board 63 and 64 from the other table and thinking there was no way for there to be enough imps for a comeback

waking up next morning turning on the ipad and going to acbl site to check bullettins glancing at picture of Spingold winners and then it dawning on me that the picture was of the losers, so I thought.
