I quite like 3♠ over 2NT. If partner has some spades we probably want to bid 4♠ over 4♥, so somebody has to bid them at some stage. Anyway with 6-4 shape and the spade suit I want to be in the auction.

aren't you kind of stepping in "it" here? 2NT has to be one of the more common psyches and 3♠ strikes me too much like a preempt/preempt situation so pass is forced IMV Iwill reopen over 3♥. not sure what I will do over 4♥.

The one with shortness in their suit should take action but doing it immediately with this hand is not wise, not enough values. in the given auction, partner might have an opening hand but with heart length so he couldn't do anything. Even if he only has the expected about 10, 3S should do well.

The problem is if they bid 4♥, you don't know if RHO has an 18 count with 5 spades or what. It's so much safer to act the first time, if he doubles you it's a level lower and maybe opener with short spades / lots of offense / etc will get in his way and just bid 4♥ over 3♠ first.

Good point. I just might change my mind. What worries me is that we will end up in 4S if partner has opening hand and support. Maybe I shouldn't worry about the fate of 4S?

One more point. If they bid 4♥ and partner doesn't raise you then you are getting a spade lead, through the strong hand, often from shortness. Yay!

I guess I choose Pass and 3♠. But that's just beacuse I can 'see' the future, IRL I'd bid 3♠ at the first opportunity.

3♠ 1st opportunity. It's a 6-4 with 7 losers. The playing strength is adequate (even if pard takes me seriously) and RHO, who is the only one who can double, will have his hypothetical ♠KJx behind me and might be weary to double anyway.
