In fourth seat, None Vul, you hear this auction:

West North East South

2 - pass - 2NT - ??? (2 is weak, usually 6 cards; 2NT = forcing query)

Do you act with the South hand?

If you choose to pass, the bidding continues (hidden)

West North East South

2 pass 2NT pass

3 pass pass ??? , where 3 is the weakest response

What do you do now?

I quite like 3 over 2NT.  If partner has some spades we probably want to bid 4 over 4, so somebody has to bid them at some stage.  Anyway with 6-4 shape and the spade suit I want to be in the auction.

aren't you kind of stepping in "it" here? 2NT has to be one of the more common psyches and 3 strikes me too much like a preempt/preempt situation so pass is forced IMV Iwill reopen over 3. not sure what I will do over 4.

Pass, but I'd protect with 3 when they stop in 3. RHO hasn't promised the earth, so I can expect partner to have something in the 8-10 range.

Agree with this, except partner may have a much better hand than 8-10.

I'm with the number guy.

Pass, then 3S in the balancing seat. The one with shortness in their suit should take action but doing it immediately with this hand is not wise, not enough values. in the given auction, partner might have an opening hand but with heart length so he couldn't do anything. Even if he only has the expected about 10, 3S should do well.

The problem is if they bid 4, you don't know if RHO has an 18 count with 5 spades or what. It's so much safer to act the first time, if he doubles you it's a level lower and maybe opener with short spades / lots of offense / etc will get in his way and just bid 4 over 3 first.

Good point. I just might change my mind. What worries me is that we will end up in 4S if partner has opening hand and support. Maybe I shouldn't worry about the fate of 4S?
