Board 15. Bidding Script. South opens 1, north bids 1 if he can. If North bids 1, south raises to 2 if he can, or uses a support dble if east bids below 2s. After this NS are quiet throughout. Thus if West overcalls a natural 2 ns don't bid more.

Scores: 3Ne=11, 3Nw=9, 3D=7, 4d=5, 5D=2

3NT gets 11 and 4NT gets 0? I don't claim a brilliancy prize but 0 sure seems harsh, especially when 3NT wrongsided gets 9 and 4NT was rightsided. For example maybe south leads a club which dummy wins and the heart is onside. Or maybe south leads a high spade from a 3325 hand. I think something like 3 or 4 is fair.

Am I missing something or is 3N scored too high? Only 8 tricks on top and I think there are too many layouts where NS have at least 5 tricks, possibly more, for this to be an 11/9. For instance a black suit lead winning, and and H Q/J/T back.

I mean sure if A is onside it's a sure make, but that's not a lock by any means.

gnasher is correct, they bid only 5D, not six. Their score has been changed to reflect this oversight.

Jdonn raises a valid comment about 3NT versus 4NT. I didn't pay enough attention to the fact that he and GIB bid one more for the road. Changing the score for 4NT will not alter the overall standings, but this is a great hand to consider. The way to the 10th tricks is clearly in spades, so the question becomes, the frequency of a 10th trick in notrump before the defense scores a bunch of hearts. We know north has five hearts and south three by the description of support double in the bidding script. For 4NT to make, does not south have to have both top spades, and the club ace? What are our odds of that? Probably higher on the bidding than the less than 10% I gave it.

  • 2 weeks later...
1 - PA - 1 - 2

PA - 3 - PA - 3

PA - 3 - PA - 3NT

All pass

Thanks, what is 3?

A general rule that some people use is that when there are two possible cuebids, the one that could possibly be natural is natural.

In this auction, it is impossible that somebody would want to bid 2H naturally, because they did not overcall 1H originally. However, it is possible that this person would want to bid clubs naturally now, since there is no way to show a natural club overcall over 1C. Thus, 3C is natural and 2H is the strong raise.
