aguahombre
Looks like a balanced hand to me. 4♥ ; but I can't bid 4♣ anyway, because it means something else.
Hanoi5
I can and bid 4♣. Edit: No, I don't. 4♣ should be a small card, maybe 4♦ is better.
blackshoe
4♥ for me.
neilkaz
4♥ for me says that I have 4 card support and that I expect game to probably make if PD has a min 1♥ bid. I don't hate splintering but splintering with a stiff ace can cause PD to missevaluate the combined hands, expecting a stiff spot instead. Flame
4♣ The singlton A is not a problem here.
jdonn
We definitely need partner's values outside clubs (in spades in particular). That's what 4♣ tells him. I just don't get why some people have an automatic aversion to stiff ace. If partner has KQx QJxxx Qx xxx we want to be in slam, but if he has xxx QJxxx Qx KQx we want to stop in game. This is why we play splinters!
Fluffy
7♦ looks like the value bid  I'd bid 4♣ also jilly, my next bid is 5♦

Cascade
Looks like a balanced hand to me. Except for the obvious singleton.
aguahombre
Yes, Wayne. I noticed the singleton and as stated would bid 4C if it meant that in our style. No I am not worried that the stiff is a bullet. No I woudn't splinter and then bid again over 4H (people love to do that, and I love it when they are someone else's partner.) peachy
The choice is between 4C splinter and 4H balanced powerhouse. If your agreement is you cannot splinter with a singleton ace, then no matter what you bid, it will be a lie. Pick the lie you like better, for me, 4C. jillybean
I bid 4♣, lho came in with 5♣ and partner bid 5♥, do you go on?
the hog
I bid 4H as I don't think splintering with a stiff bullet is a good idea.I pass 5H; partner could have made a forcing pass with a slam going hand.
peachy
I bid 4♣, lho came in with 5♣ and partner bid 5♥, do you go on? No, I pass 5H. Pass by partner would be forcing, because we were constructively bidding game.Dbl would have suggested defending, so he does not have a good hand to defend or to suggest slam. He took charge by bidding 5H and I need to respect that.
nigel_k
I bid 4♣, lho came in with 5♣ and partner bid 5♥, do you go on? Agree with 4♣. A splinter with stiff ace is not ideal but is better than treating the hand as balanced. This is pretty much at the lower end in terms of strength. If partner made a forcing pass of their 5♣ I would cue bid 5♦, but still pass if he bids 5♥ next. Over a direct 5♥ it is a definite pass. Fluffy
what is this nonsense that 4♥ shows a balanced hand? what system is this?
peachy
what is this nonsense that 4♥ shows a balanced hand? what system is this? Completely normal bridge, not nonsense.
cherdanno
what is this nonsense that 4♥ shows a balanced hand? what system is this? A system where a 2NT rebid is non-forcing :P
P_Marlowe
Hi, you have 3 options#1 4H - right on values, usually showes a semibal. hand#2 4C - a splinter, the ace is ugly, but than the other options also have their flaws#3 1S - as long as it is forcing, keeps the bidding low, may give you the best chance to get information from p, the suit is ugly I would go with 1S. With kind regardsMarlowe
