MTSummit
Vul. both east opens 1♣ you have: ♠KQ♥AQxx♦KQxx♣xxx what would you do? pass? (reluctance for me with 16 points)double? (i don't like cause only 2 spades, although 2 honors)1NT? (not safe without club stopper if we would possibly go to 3NT and west would probably lead club) i personally chose to overcall 1D, what do you think? thanks & regards
nigel_k
I would pass. Maybe I get to double next time and somebody has bid spades by then so partner won't think I have them. I wouldn't bid 1♦ because I don't really want partner to raise them or lead them and it doesn't help us find hearts if that is our suit. If not passing, I prefer 1♥ to 1♦, don't like double at all and 1NT would be my last choice.
the hog
I would bid 1H and do not see this as a problem.
Hanoi5
If I had the ♥T it would be an automatic 1♥. However, I'm torn between 1♥ and 1NT, even without the stopper.
Free
1♥ or 1NT are both fine for me. 1♦ is not imo.
hanp
I'd pass, not a difficult choice. It would be hard to choose from 1NT, double and 1H as I dislike them all. I think I might try double if I couldn't pass. Edit: on second thought I'd rather bid 1NT than double, 1H still fourth choice.

pooltuna
Q1) I would probably risk an XQ2) pass feels like a total surrender to me.Q3) True, X is uncomfortable but tolerable because of the extra strength I would probably pass without as little as the Q♥or the Q♠Q4) The problem I see for 1♦ is what are you going to call if the auction proceeds (1♣) 1♦ (P) 1♠ (P) ? Consequently that brings the 1♥ overcall into the picture as you could now call 2♦ over 1♠
TylerE
You can get lots of +800s by learning to pass hands like this in tempo. If you force me to do something other than pass I would bid 1N, feels like the smallest distortion of my hand. Hate overcalling 1suit. The problem there is that I don't really know what to do if partner raises...the difference between a 3 and 4 card raise is HUGE in terms of playability. Consequently that brings the 1♥ overcall into the picture as you could now call 2♦ over 1♠ yeah it is a big problem, and it happened in my game, i kept thinking for long and made a 2♣ and prayed... fortunately my p then bid 2♥ :) You can get lots of +800s by learning to pass hands like this in tempo. 655321
Hate 1♦ (you won't ever be able to bid hearts) and double (you only have 2 spades). Pass, 1♥ and 1NT are all plausible calls. I would probably bid 1♥.
Siegmund
I reluctantly vote for double (passing a 1S advance.) I applaud anyone who can pass in tempo with this hand. I would happily pass 14 and some bad 15s in this spot; can't quite make myself do it with 16.
gnasher
I think 1NT is OK. It will work out badly if we belong in notrumps from partner's side, but it describes the general nature of our hand. I'd rather do that than have to commit to the three level with a sequence like 1♣-pass-1♠-pass 2♠-dblor be wondering whether to bid after 1♣-pass-1♠-pass 1NT
whereagles
16 and balanced. Where's the problem? Shape/str > stoppers. 1NT.
Rossoneri
1N seems like the best of the lot if we're not passing.
neilkaz
This is a pass for me. Dub KQ is a defect so I am close to deducting a full point anyhow and where are my helpful spots and sources of tricks. Oh did I mention no stopper?!? If 1NT gets whacked..I really hope pard has 4 of a red suit and that I can get to it and then not go for 500. If I overcall 1NT and the opps bid game they know where every missing high card is and even the little dog sitting in my lap can play the hand better then. Overcalling 1♦ is LOL and overcalling 1♥ better since if we catch pard with some cards and a fit we reach the same game as after 1NT. Doubling is close to LOL since we can find the same 4-4 ♥ fit if we gamble 1NT but puke if pard bids 1♠. I just pass and clearly. I want something added to my AQ to make a vul 4 card o/c and sometimes when u pass, LHO bids 1H and  u lie in the weeds and the opps bid to 4♥. wclass___
Once I posted a defense scheme vs. natural 1♣ where 1♦ was defined as 5♦+4M overcall strength+ or 5♦+ ~16+; Forcing. I went through some boards and concluded that this 1♦ can handle also various 4♦4M32 hands very well. So wtp 1♦ for me.
Fluffy
I would rather bid 1♦ than 1♥ keeping more space, do people think this is wrong?
