Hanoi5
I'm going yellow on the first one: Pass. On the second one I'd love to play 2NT for the minors, but since I don't 3♣.
aguahombre
Does it matters whether 3♦ is preemptive or mixed or limit? Apparently not to partner, who didn't stretch to support and didn't make a responsive double. chartreus card. 2nd one 2Nt is for minors, and it is still ugly. Fortunately partner will choose the lower with equal lengths, so "it's only matchpoints".
JLOGIC
Huh, I would never consider bidding on hand 2, seems like madness. I would double on the first hand unless it was a limit raise.
hanp
Why is bidding on the first hand madness? We have about half the deck and it's none vul at matchpoints.

MarkDean
Two balances for me. I consider both close, but mp nv/nv is a strange beast.
awm
I'd double on the first hand only if 3♦ was weak and they play strong notrumps. In this situation, opener will almost always have a weak notrump in which case we tend to have half the deck or more. So we want to balance with our appropriate shape, despite the lack of values. If 3♦ is a limit raise then opponents often have "almost game values" without a great diamond fit (with a great diamond fit they might've bid game anyway). This is a bad time to balance. If they play weak notrump and 3♦ is weak, then opener often has a strong notrump and again they frequently have "just short of game values" and a lousy diamond fit.
