Red vs White, you get:

AT96532

654

964

1-???

Let's suppose you pass:

1-Pa-1NT*-X

2-???

And finally:

1-Pa-1NT*-X

2-2-3-X

3-Pa-Pa-3

Pa-???

How many spades in each case?

2S now. 3S is forgiveable but risky against greedy opps.

I'd much rather bid now than later. Preempting after opps know their strength and distribution sorta misses the point.

I don't like 3S on the 2nd round either, partner will pass with a lot of hands where game is good especially since he probably only has 3 spades and we didn't overcall 1S.

Obv a lot depends on his club holding. If he has, say Kxx vs Axx that can swing 2 or 3 tricks sometimes. But sometimes they have to lead a club rather than a heart to capitalize, or underlead their heart the 2nd round. And if worst comes to worst and he has neither round suit ace it's possible we're going down in 3 anyways. I don't feel like partner will be able to evaluate well enough over 3, and will be overly worried about trumps.

I'll assume talks of bidding 3 are a joke.

If someone doesn't bid 2, presumably it's because they don't deem the hand good enough. This seems reasonable with 3 small hearts, but I think the 7 card suit combined with the T9 of spades makes this too conservative.

If someone doesn't bid 1 presumably it's because their style makes this unacceptable and they will get buried/their partner will double/or something.

If 1S was not an option I'd rank 2S>>>P>>>>>>>>>>>>>3S but I am happy to bid 1 so w/e. I think not bidding 2 is just a conservative view.

I could see how one could have a style/set of agreements where they pass, but the final result that you have to pass with this hand seems ridiculous.

I bid 2 when I held this hand - in our style the 7th compensates for the general weakness , and the vulnerability.

Actually , partner who held KQJx told me later he knew I held a 7 card suit, since I needed a 7th card to bid 2 with a weak suit at that vulnerability.

How many spades in each case?

pass 2s pass

overcall 1s (r vs w) can do nothing except incite insanity in future partners (this one will leave you after seeing your "overcall")

I have much more sympathy for those that try the risky 2s than 1s.

2s having passed (thank gooodness) this 2s bid should not get p overly excited and

realize this bid is primarily based on length

pass I have a partner that felt doubling 3d was a better shot than inviting 3s

and their dia power is bad news opposite my void. I feel i would have to be lucky to make 3s at this point.
