BAM teams we reached 6C to tie the board after the uninspiring auction of

1D-1S

2C-3N

4N-6C

what would be a better auction in particular how do we get to 6N?

Responder knows his dQ may be golden and should use 4th Suit GF ) :

1D - 1S

2C - 2H! ( 4th suit GF )

3C - 4C! ( RKC )

4H! ( 1 or 4 if 0314 )

At this point Responder is wondering if 1 or 4 key cards since Opener showed a minimum hand with the 2C rebid.

Since Responder has all of those Q's and K's, it is hard to imagine an opening count with only ONE key card..... so it must be FOUR. Also, Opener can't have the Diam K because then he would have had 18 hcp....

So, with that "golden" Diam Q he rightfully chooses 6NT as the final small slam.... eventho the grand may make on a hook.

And responder knows that opener has the jack and ten of diamonds? How does he know that?

It isn't wrong to bid these to six clubs. Only Don Kersey would know to bid them to 6NT.

You're right.

After finding the 4 key cards, Opener would be hard pressed to also have even the Diam J. 6C would be the safer contract... although leading toward the Diam Q makes 6NT if the K is onside.

1D-1S

2C-2H

3C-3NT

4C-4H

4NT-5C

5D-5H

6C-6NT

2H=4th suit GF

3C=Waiting, can be 1354

4C=5/5 invite

4NT=RKC

5C=1

5D=Q ask (grand try)

5H=CQ and HQ

6C=No more to say (Would bid 5NT last train asking about diamonds if holding x Ax AQxxx AKxxx)

6NT=Responder knows opener, having slam interest with 4C should have a minimum of x Ax AJxxx AKxxx)

Oh, sure he should. With x Ax Axxxx AKJxx, he would have no business trying for slam at all. Lucky he did, though, or we would not have reached six clubs.

What's that? We reached 6NT instead? Well...

Assuming the other table is playing in 6C, though, 6NT will give you the board if partner has x, Ax, AJxxx, AKxxx (ok, it might push if the clubs are 4-0 offside) and is equally likely to swing in or out if partner has x, Ax, Axxxx, AKJxx, so surely you should bid it even if you don't know about the J?

Andy.... when did the 4NT-RKC bidder ( Opener ) find out about the Sp K ?
Opener didn't find out about the SK, hence 6C.

6NT=Responder knows opener, having slam interest with 4C should have a minimum of x Ax AJxxx AKxxx)

That's true, I forgot about the jack of clubs. On second thoughts I think over 5H, both 5S and 5NT should both be grand tries revolving around the diamond suit since opener will never need to bid 5S asking about spades. That way responder should have a fair idea on what kind of diamond suit opener has.

"You are old, Father David", the young man said,

"And you don't even play the fit jump,

But maybe the notion might enter your head

Why we could not have reached six no trump?"

"In my youth", said the old man, "I thought like a hero

And would bid six no trump just the same,

But the number of legs I could stand on was zero

When the enemy played it in game."
