Frying Pan or Fire?

[hv=d=e&v=n&s=sha97dak9653ckt65]133|100|Scoring: IMP

You can tell from the spots, this is a real hand...

RHO passes, you open 1, LHO passes and parter jumps to 2.

The 2 bid is 6+ spades (usally six) and weak (generally 7 hcp or less... at this vul, will not be as weak as other vuls, but not more than a really yucky 8 hcp). [/hv]

What thought process guide your choice (chance for game, stay low on misfit, try to find a better fit?). Do you pass or try any other bid?

For instance, do you try 3 on the theory it is a better suit than his spades and he might have some diamonds? Do you try 3 on the theory that it gives you two chances to find a fit while pass leaves you in a misfit? Do you try 2NT in the hope to find 3NT vul or is 2NT for you longer diamonds and a shorter club suit for you? Or is 2NT for you a transfer to 3 where you can rebid 3 to show a better or worse hand than 3 immediately.

1) 2 may be our best (or equal least-worst) contract.

2) No one has doubled yet.

3) Pass sounds like a normal action over a weak jump shift, so the opps may not get suspicious.

The main purpose of a weak jump shift is to serve as a warning against unwarranted game or slam explorations. Heed the warning.

1st sentence lie. 2nd sentence truth.

Partner's hand could be useless in diamonds but our hand sure isn't useless in spades!

Q1] pass

Q2] when you have a misfit and 0 game chances (well very low) it is best to stop at once.

Q3] not used to playing WJS not in competition so I assume this is not a 2NT hand as I would think that would be at least game invitational. Another reason to pass is the weak hand's suit usually provides more tricks than your long suit will.

If you are not used to it, perhaps you should try it. Unless, of course, you are playing invitational jump shifts which seems optimal to me after having tried all the different options B)

Pass is obvious. I like Ben too much to deliver a LOL.

Pard's hand is worth plenty in spades but next to worthless in any other strain.

Hopefully LHO balances which looks juicy.

I play 3D as a contract correction and 2NT as a shortage enquiry (i.e. not natural).

I think pass is normal and correct.

I might have a better fit playing in diamonds, but I might not, and I'll be a level higher. My partnership doesn't make a WJS with 3-card support for partner's suit without good pips in the WJS suit, but there might be a better 6-2 diamond fit. Or it might be a disaster.
