What to do here?

The double was a good practical action even if your hand is a bit subminimum for it.

Partner isn't willing to play 3N with his spades and doesn't have 4H... I am leaving it at 4C and hoping we make it. At least in clubs we are ruffing spades in the correct hand, which we won't be in diamonds.

All red, MP's:

J

J9xx

AQTxx

9xx

1NT-3-X-Pa

4-Pa-???

How do you rate the double?

What would you do now?

How is partner interpreting your double? Not that I have a problem with either interpretation but need to now to decide how to proceed over 4

I don't like the double...it's close but on this hand, I'd have just passed.

Double announces ownership of the hand, imo, and we aren't quite strong enough.

We wouldn't be sure that we'd like to see 3N from partner...he rates to hold only one spade stopper and even if diamonds run, rho may have an entry. And if he has 4 hearts, there is a higher than normal chance of bad breaks.

I'd just have passed and hoped to go +100 or so.

As it is, I predictably now face a guess, and guessing wrong will convert what was likely a small plus into a small minus....altho when all are red, the imp swing may be significant.

I guess to bid 4.

I think the pass is clear and pass now is beyond clear. Partner would almost always bid 3NT or pass rather than bid a 4 card club suit here if he can help it, even on hands without much in spades. Besides the last thing I need is to start getting tapped.

10x KQx Kxxx AKxx, would you pass, bid 3N or....4?

Edit: bad example: I'd bid 4 and I suspect you would as well. Goes to show that making up hands to make a point can backfire.

I'm not sure why I'm arguing with you over this, since neither you nor I would be in this situation, as the only 2 passers of 3 so far.

Actually sorry I had a typo I meant to say the double is clear and the pass next round is beyond clear. So keep arguing with me!

At MPs I think I would pass with this. Maybe at IMPs too; partner should not be prone to forcing us to the 4 level on marginal values to compete with the part score.

Agree with Josh, passing 4 is clear. Frankly bidding is a LOL.
