What is this 4D?

Recommended Posts

Phil asked what 4 was on an auction in this forum just earlier. That reminded me of the following auction.... How do you play 4s here?

Opener  You Responder Partner

  (2)   Pass  (Pass)   3

 (Pass)   4

On this auction, I am forcing you to play 3 as Michaels cue-bid showing 's and either minor.

Good question. I think it should be good because (1) 2 (p) 3 is good but obviously this is a little different. I think it is forcing.

3 is good hearts????? I thought it was "your suits suck lets try my 6 or 7 carder"

I would think it means "I want to play in your minor if it is diamonds; if it is clubs, then play in hearts". I don't normally play 3S here as Michaels so obviously there has been no discussion:). Without discussion, as the Michaels bidder, would I be allowed to pass 4D? I think not.

It's becoming popular after Michaels to play

2NT=invitational or better in partner's minor

3=pass/correct

3=invitational or better in partner's major

3M=natural, to play

I think this is vastly superior to trying to escape in your own suit.

Yeah.. I like the new approach.

Well, i play leaping michaels here, so my 3 is looking for a spade stopper for 3NT. I ran across the given auction recently where 3 was michaels. I tried to find online (google) what 4 would mean.

I think good heart raise is the best meaning, and that is what the 4 bidder meant it to be.

If your suit is diamonds 4d (if you are lucky i can give u 2 tricks) is probably our limit if your suit is clubs I want to be in at least game if not more I would imagine a hand similar to

xxx(x)

x

xx(x)

Axxxxx

It is vital to inform p of the incredible club fit (if there is one) we can always

cue bid at the 5 level (or even bid 4s) if we have a strong heart hand. P chose 3s because they believe the hand belongs in a suit (they did not x 2s which we could possibly convert to penalties) so lets inform them where we can play.

P did not bid 4H if anything their minor suit is probably better than their heart suit.

their hand is quite offensive in the sense they are forcing us to bid at the 4 level and we could have nothing. I would imagine the only place they want to play is in one of their suits so it's best to forget any ideas of showing a new suit natural.

Their hand might be similar to (as a minimum)

x

AQJxx

x

KQJTxx

with x KQJTxx x AQJxx they have a much easier 4h bid.
