Except North's initial pass (we do not open that hand in that position), all the other biddings seems debatable. For sure, the final result isn't good at all. What do you think?(BTW, it was not a mixed competition, the lady can sit indifferently in S or N :) )
jdonn
Given that you don't want to open that hand north did nothing wrong at all, what do you want him to do differently? This is 100% south who sold out with 4 spades and doubled the opponents with bad clubs.
MFA
South should definitely not double 3♣. With that hand I would expect 3♣ to make most of the time. Partner is a passed hand. If he has a typical ♠AKJxx out, where will our 5 tricks come from? The question should be if south dares to compete to 3♠ or not. Being vul at mp it does seem rather dangerous. North's bidding can't be criticized.
P_Marlowe
Hi, #1 I prefer X or 1NT instead of the 1S bid, you have a 5 card spade suit, but the quality is debatable#2 2S is fine, you have a 9 card fit, but you also have the spades You know, that is their hand, but most likely they wont have game, and it is not sure, that you can make 3S, so let them play on the 3 level#3 X is ? Sry, the bid does not exist, and if you make such penalty double, you better beat the contract And South knowes, about the 9 card fit, i.e. most of all (non existing) spade values, wont be of any use for the defense. => X With kind regardsMarlowe
Fluffy
north's only blame is to accept playing with south (exagerating)
Cyberyeti
I disagree slightly with people exonerating north, I don't like 2 of his actions, but I don't think they caused the bad result. I would never pass the north hand, but if I was forced to, I would double rather than bid 1♠. This would be enough to net +100 at least as pard will most likely lead the doubleton diamond, but in the knowledge that partner has 4 spades (as S will bid 2♠ over 2♣) N might bid 3♠ anyway. Opening 1♠ would guarantee we played in 3♠. With the south hand I would only consider doubling 3♣ with better pips in the trump suit, I have no real issues doubling with Q10xx even though +100 wouldn't be a great result. At the vulnerability, I'm not sure how much I like 3♠ opposite a passed partner, although with inexperienced opps I'm less likely to be doubled. jjbrr
South's double is hopeless. I wouldn't bid 3♠
OSH
Ok, I think now the matter is clear, thank you. BTW, no one considered an alternative to North final pass, so we understand that, in this situation, the X is mandatory (sort of).

I would phrase it differently: What are the alternatives to Pass? And North has the Ace of trumps, and 1-2 tricks in hearts.
