This hand came up during a just-for-fun teams afternoon of live bridge. Scoring was IMPs:

J

A K X X X X X

X

K X X X

What would you open in 1st or 2nd seat?

If you open 1 what is your rebid after 1 and why?

A 4H opening is not as bad as it looks. Depends a bit on vulnerability. When we're NV vs V for example our missed slams aren't as big a loss and their missed games are big wins. Some other people will say that it's better to open 4H when we're V because then you show some cards. I don't agree with them.

A 3H opening is completely stupid.

1H is the normal opening so I will make it. Over 1S I will bid 2C. We've made it this far without competition so it means we may as well try to describe our hand.

We have different views on how to describe a minimum opening bid with a lot of hearts.

I agree with this plan

1 then 2 for me which I prefer to 1 then 2 with a 7 bagger, but at favorable vul I think I'd just shoot out 4 in first seat.

EDIT: Yes, as others have pointed out, it would have been good if the OP had mentioned the vulnerably which will always matter for any preempt situation.

1st fav, I would open 4 because I think the preemptive value is very high. 1st other or 2nd I would open 1, because I don't really ODR for preempting. If partner has a singleton heart, I could easily have 3 defensive tricks. Change the hand to x KQJxxxx x Axxx and now I would open 4 at all except maybe 2nd unfav. If I open 1, obv rebid 2

Why is 3H an option? Its 4H or 1H, the lack of aces prefers 4H, there is also a lack of depth of hearts honours- partner need quite a lot to continue in hearts or offer clubs. Its also that the second suit is a minor and though spades is OK if the quality of your hand is biased towards hearts as a contract.

Touchdown. The crowd is cheering.

1714 distribution and we are given free reign in this auction?! What's up?!

Try to imagine hands around this table with sane players.

EDIT: Yea aquahombre, doesn't that picture answer what should be bid?

Monster misfit or partner knows what he'll do next over 2H.

I like 1 then 3, we are unlikely to miss a game if partner passes. But I see no big problem with just opening 4. I think opening 1 and rebidding either 2 or 2 is just a great way to miss a game.
