Unless I think they're going -2 I should definitely balance.

 

Am I afraid I'm going to balance them into game or something? Even if we're in 2♦-2 this could still be a fine result. We'd be going at 50 a trick.

 

Maybe I'm supposed to bid 1♠ but I think you should just double. If partner bids diamonds he'll probably have 5 of them, but really I have nothing to be ashamed of with my hand, even in a diamond partial.

 

Being white I wouldn't even be sure letting them play TWO hearts would be a good idea. Even with 3 tricks in my own hand.

I have a pretty good 4 card ♠ suit and in direct seat with this hand I prefer a 1♠ overcall to dbl since I really don't want to hear a 2♦ reply. Therefore I clearly prefer to balance 1♠ and if PD competes to 2♠ on 3 cards, I don't mind here.

you pass 2♦. The same way you pass when it goes for example 2♠-x-p-p when you have a weak two of spades. Sometimes actions work out, sometimes they don't work out. Not saying that 2♦ can't be the best contract; partner is quite likely actually to have at least 5 cards this auction. Also 2♠x can be a good score for us. It's just that you're not hoping for 2♦ from partner and you're not hoping for 2♠ to be doubled and passed.

1♠ for me as my best route to a small plus and an outside chance of 3nt if pard had to pass a moderate flat hand with 3 or 4 hearts in it. If any number of notrump is right, pard needs to bid it.

 

I can see pass or double followed by a ♦ bid from pard as the most likely way to get a minus score. At least if pard bids 2♦ over 1♠ I won't be wondering if we're in a silly 4-2 fit.
