pooltuna
Dealer: South Vul: E/W Scoring: IMP ♠ 976 ♥ [space] ♦ KJ843 ♣ J9876 I try to go with the %age action and while our license to steal is fully charged I still tend to resist since I'm holding 3 ♠

Cyberyeti
Easy 2D, but then KJxxx on its own is better than I often have.
Apollo81
I'm definitely opening 2♦. Give me better spots and I'm tempted to open 3.
Phil
2♦. Pass is one of these calls that no one can blame you for. We've all been involved in a recap like this - Board 3: -1430+680 Lose 13. Your teammate apologizes as they couldn't find slam after (2♦) - x (4♦) - 4♥ - AP. He then takes a look at your hand and everyone nods and thinks 2♦ is either crazy or not my 'style'. 655321
OK obviously 2♦ is an option if we have a weak 2 diamonds available. When I first read the question I thought we were supposed to choose between pass and 3♦. I would be tempted, might even do it, although I almost never open a 3 level preempt on a 5 card suit in real life.
mikeh
I don't mind either pass or 2♦. At this vulnerability, I may be able to back in later if I pass (altho probably won't, since that is too likely to let the opps reaf the distribution). Phil's point is well taken but otoh we have sometimes seen the comparison of -1430, -100....after the preempt, they had no trouble picking up the Queen of hearts. jdonn
2 sure. 3 no way. Your partner is allowed to sacrifice you know, or bid 3NT expecting tricks. Or you just get doubled there...
mikegill
2♦ might win too by directing the lead against hearts. count me in.
whereagles
I think I'd do it too. I have the advantage of playing 5 cards weak 2s systemically, so pard may not hang me for this liberty :)
gwnn
If we're going into system, I play 2C as a bad weak 2 in diamonds or a strong hand with whatever. This hand would qualify. :)
Siegmund
I am not tempted, unless I have a bid for both minors in the system. But then I am one of those strange folks who doesn't like to see voids or second suits in first-seat weak twos.
kfay
I've preempted at the 3-level once on a 5-card suit... but it was KQJ109 it worked out great but I doubt I'll do it again anytime soon.
Cascade
If we're going into system, I play 2C as a bad weak 2 in diamonds or a strong hand with whatever. This hand would qualify. :) Does it qualify as: 1. The weak two in diamonds or 2. The strong hand with whatever?
cherdanno
Am I reading this correctly that we are 1st seat w/r at IMPs with 3055?2♦ surely.

wank
i suspect i'd go for 3D. i'm quite shocked that some people would pass - I'm normally a very conservative pre-emptor.
Echognome
3♠ seems like it might really get them. Of course I only find that I try out such craziness in online bridge.
aguahombre
Not 3♦, and not going to change system to allow 2, just because this hand came up. I will have other oportunities to jack the opps around.

gwnn
2NT natural also possibly very effective, btw. And did I mention 3♥?
gnasher
I opened 3♦, LHO overcalled 3NT, and they played there instead of in their 9-card heart fit. 3NT went one down, whilst in the other room 4♥ was made with careful play. Of course, that's only one data point.
