gwnn
Q98xxxAKQJ8Kx AxT9xxAQxxAJx 1N from south. 1N-2N-3D*-p3H-p-4C-p4D-p-4N-p0/3-p-6H- in an outrageous act involving massive UI, RHO bids 7C then changes her mind and passes (vulnerability is equal, you see). everybody laughs and LHO leads a small trump. 2N showed both minors and 3D showed spades at least initially. Hanoi5
I'm afraid I'll play a spade to my Ace. And another spade if I win that. I'll try ruffing 2 spades with ♥T9. If the ♠A is ruffed I'll wait for the right answer.
pooltuna
I'm afraid I'll play a spade to my Ace. And another spade if I win that. I'll try ruffing 2 spades with ♥T9. If the ♠A is ruffed I'll wait for the right answer. My gut reaction as well. But not sure that playing another trump is hopeless if declarer's lho also has a stiff K,J, or T of ♠s. Of course any 3-2 ♠ break works. So apparently we need to weigh the odds of 0-2-(56) vs x-1-(56) where x=K,J,T
mikeh
I think it was John Lowenthal who was famous for saying that if you want a defensive ruff....lead trumps. But in real life, few players seem to adopt that strategy, so I would not expect LHO to be void in spades. And playing a second trump before tackling spades risks LHO being 1=1 in the majors, and now rho gets to lead a third round of trump when he wins the first spade. I win the trump in dummy, and play a spade to the Ace. If this draws any of the 10/J/or K, then I pull trump and concede a spade and I can establish a spade in dummy easily enough by way, eventually, of a ruffing finesse (or the Q is good when the K appears). If no big spade appears, then I lead low and cover whatever spade LHO plays...if he plays none, then I duck, and hope to ruff 2 spades with the 109 of hearts, using the diamond K as one entry to dummy and clubs as the other(s). jdonn
For some reason I thought we were in 7♥ and I couldn't figure out why it was a play problem.
