gwnn
Do you play a different 1NT defence as a passed hand or balancing? In what way? Why? Why not? Did I forget a relevant question? If so, what? And what is your answer?
Phil
No. Others that do are probably using a lousy system like Capp which sucks even worse in the balancing seat and is unplayable by a PH.
bluecalm
I play multi landy from both hands (passed or not) but I feel that in balancing position there is a strong case for having some bid for hands with a minor. Maybe dbl as 5+minor 4major is nice in balancing seat or maybe all natural and dbl majors is even nicer. I don't notice many bad results from multi landy though so we didn't bother to switch. MarkDean
Somes times I play it differently as a passed hand. If I am playing Landy, agree that as a passed hand double is clubs (why we do this and do not make 2C nat and double the majors is not clear to me: I guess that is more likely to end in a forget?) NickRW
Passed hand defence should cater to whatever shapes you are unlikely to have opened even preemptively. If you're using X as pen normally - which you certainly might against weak NT - obviously that is a waste by a passed hand. Not sure many optimise their system to this degree though. CSGibson
I like using DONT in the balancing seat because that increases the probability that the NT opener is on lead (3 of 4 hands that start out X, and more than half the hands that make 2-suited calls)

Cyberyeti
I used to play a penalty double by an unpassed hand with one of the ASTRO variants and 2M natural, by a passed hand, we played 2m as that suit and a major, X=H, 2H=majors, 2S=nat. gnasher
I prefer to play Lionel (dbl = spades + another, 2m = natural + hearts, 2M = natural) as a passed hand. Compared with DONT, that offers a bit more definition but a bit less flexibility. As an unpassed hand, I like to have a penalty double available, mainly because a significant proportion of the strong notrumps that are opened against me seem to consist of a 13-count with AK10xxx in a minor. bluecalm
What's a double for you when playing multi-landy? I prefer playing penalty double from direct seat and that is what we play with reg pd. From reopening we play that it's 11+ with at least 4-3 majors (more often 4-4).In most casual partnerships here in Poland we play double as 5m-4M (which I don't lik much but it's standard here). I may be easily convinced penalty double is not the best as profits from it are rare (but once they come up they are huge :) ), from reopenign seat I don't really like our convention. like using DONT in the balancing seat because that increases the probability that the NT opener is on lead (3 of 4 hands that start out X, and more than half the hands that make 2-suited calls) I think it's reasonable. I noticed Brogeland - Lindqvist play that way.
mcphee
I do like to play a different defense in the balancing seat and prefer transfer landy. I have encountered hands where I would have like a 2 suited bid available. However I discovered the problems with those hand types mostly arose from partner not handling his hand correctly. awm
Somes times I play it differently as a passed hand. If I am playing Landy, agree that as a passed hand double is clubs (why we do this and do not make 2C nat and double the majors is not clear to me: I guess that is more likely to end in a forget?) One advantage is that you'd like to be able to occasionally pass the balancing double. It's often tempting to balance on dubious hands with both majors (because the upside of finding a fit is so high), but balancing into clubs can easily help opponents reach a diamond fit or major suit fit that they otherwise missed. So the balance which "shows clubs" will normally have real values (and the double can be passed).
Tomi2
since in poland direct x is 5m/4M x in balancing seat is "I think you had a penalty double but had no bid available"... this always works, sometimes even with screens...
