sceptic
How many different variants and add ons are there to jacoby transfers, or are there other types of transfers, can you include links as well if possible
helene_t
Things to discuss with partner in relation to jacoby transfers:- Do they also apply to notrump overcalls? - Do they also apply if 1NT is doubled? (A funny convention here is that rdbl asks p to bid clubs, which can be corrected to diamonds)- What does 1NT-2♠ mean? (Probably clubs. Make sure you know how to show diamonds. If 2NT means diamonds, make sure you agree what to do with a hand that would raise to 2NT. Note that 1NT-2♣ // 2♥-2NT shows spades).- First transfer, then other suit: always GF?- First Stayman, then minor suit, might be redundant if you can transfer to minor suits. There are some funny conventions you can play here if you like. If you don't, make sure that partner understands that this is not forcing, since a forcing hand would start with a transfer.- First transfer, then leap to game: Mild slam interest or not? (If so you must play Texas: 1NT-4♦ transfers to hearts, 4♥ to spades).- 1NT-3M might be redundant. There are some funny conventions you can play here if you like. Otherwise, make sure you agree whether 3M is forcing. If not, first Jacoby and then raising to 3M is forcing. But this is not the most common treatment.- Super-acceptance. I think you should superaccept only with 4-card support. First, you need 9 trumps to be law-protected at the 3-level. Second, it may be premature to establish trump suit with 3-card support if partner has a second suit. If you have't worked super-acceptance out in details, just bid 3M instead of 2M with 4-card support and something extra. Note that transfers to the minors should be superaccepted more readily. Note that the main purpose of Jacoby transfers is to free bidding space for slam conventions. For example, 1NT-2♦ // 2♥-4♦ shows six hearts and a singleton diamonds. This is something you can't show if you don't play transfers. Semantics: Note that transfers to the minors, transfers in competition, and Texas are not Jacoby transfers. Make sure that you don't forget the natural responses to 1NT, since you still need them in situations where transfers don't apply.
