overcall or not?

Recommended Posts

Don't these links stop working after a while?

Anyway, what the actual hand tells me is that if your LHO had bid 1NT you would have been shut out of the auction after passing:-

1    P    1NT    P

2    P    lots of

OK, the full hand:

[hv=d=w&v=n&n=saq43hk7543da42cq&w=skj852htdkq93cat5&e=shj2dt8765c987643&s=st976haq986djckj2]399|300|Scoring: MP[/hv]

1 - p - p - 2

p - 4 - ppp

I'm not sure east will bid 1NT after a pass by north, but he might try an adventurous double over 2.

At the table I thought pass or 2 were close, and even 1NT possible. I chose pass based on whereagles logic:

Pard will bid if it's our hand, due to his expected spade shortness

But it didn't turn out that way.

Anyway, I posted this because I am interested to discuss close/unclear decisions in ordinary situations. I see a lot of contorted auctions and freak hands posted around here, but the routine stuff is plenty to keep my brain busy.

yea yea that's so 655321, having responder respond at the worst possible moment:P

I am OK with bidding 2H over that nasty 1NT from S to be honest but I'd possibly pass there too. Now I'm quite biased of course.

mindless overbidders 1:0 normal, sensible people

Seems clear cut overcall to me at MP - seen these apparently kamikaze overcalls work out well for opps too many times. Sure you can take them for a number - sometimes - but frequency of gain - not the size - is what matters at MP.

IMPs is a different kettle of fish.

These bad overcalls work better at IMPs because at imps you don't really care about -200. -200 is very likely after a red overcall (indeed, even with a good suit), because they are relatively unlikely to double you, even if you overcall on 65432, R/W, there are millions of other things that will happen before they successfully penalise you, and -200 is horrible at MP.

sometimes it's LHO who has the shortness and it's passed out lol

anyway, you should congratulate pard on balancing this. I would have been worse if you had missed game.

the actual hand

Not sure if this tells me anything or not. Basically there were about 12-13 hcp for partner and lefty to share. Considering the suit quality, I thought it was about a 50-50 shot as to whether 2 would work or not, but maybe that wasn't right. Maybe a good hand for a sim?

In the play, opener managed to give up an extra spade trick but 4 was cold in any case.

Apart from the opening lead they didn't give up a trick, as long as declarer sets up the clubs before setting up the opponent's spades.
