Yes, universal. Hearts aren't agreed yet, 3H is a waiting bid. There was a nice article in the Deal of the Week from the Olympiad in SLC by Fred, I think the first one, unfortunately I can't find it exactly now since I don't have BBO on this computer. Fred was saying that this preference is even possibly done with a singleton heart, it says almost nothing about hearts.

This is perfectly analogous to

1H-1S

2C-2H

2S,

except opener has about a Queen more in the case of the 3C auction.

Well that's misleading from me, the auction beginning with 2C would show maybe 14-17 and the one beginning with 3C would show 18-21. So the difference is on average a king-ish but there is no gap between the two ranges. Also usually with 14 you wouldn't bid like this.

if you have the old Windows client you just look at Bridge Library and you can see the titles and there should be the Olympiad series, maybe 4 or 5 chapters. They are all a good read, you should definitely go through them, I have done it 3 or 4 times already and it's still exciting and a good read ;)

Found it, thanks. I will read up after this morning's game. :)

so we bid 3. Usually 3-5-1-4 with game forcing values ;) Life is happy. This auction is going splendidly.

Is this agreement common, expert treatment? I would take 3 as a cue bid in 's.

3 is not a cue since 3 simply showed a preference between and and hasn't yet set trumps. With that in mind the 3 bid is also needed to pattern out and show 3 card support since PD might have 5 and we belong in .

A good rule of thumb is no cue bids at the 3 level unless you are 100% certain that trumps have been agreed.

3H does not show 3 hearts, so we haven't found a fit, so 3S is natural, not a cue.

(4D would be a cue though)

I agree that the 3H preference could be as few as 2 cards with a minimum ( less than limit raise values) --and no 4+cards .... and probably only 4 cards Sp.

( With a limit raise for Hts, Responder would have immediately used their favorite Drury as a passed hand).

Then, 3S ( after 3H) by Opener shows 3 card support ( forcing ...as previously established by the 3C jump shift ).

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

"pitbulls", and some folks here... including me, suggest that the GF 3C-jump shift may be artificial.

Some, including me, also suggest that after 3C! , then 3D! by Responder can be a relay to 3H!.

This way Responder has 2 ways ( direct and indirect ) to make bids of 3S, 3NT or 4C -- thus, increasing the number of bids for hand description.

Responder's direct 4H can be used for something else other than a limit raise (because of the Drury).    So Responder also has 2 ways to make the 4D, 4H, and 4S bids ( w/ or w/o the relay ).

and it went

1D-1S

3C-???

it's a nice read. But then again all of the series is a good read.

Thanks.

I especially like Fred's comments at the end of this article;

"Many players, after a result like this, would spend needless energy thinking about who should have bid what to get where. Joey and I don't think about it at all. We bid what we bid because it seemed right at the time. Thinking about it during the next hand wastes energy. Talking about it at the table is even worse. It doesn't matter who should have bid what. Go onto the next hand"

My partner is always telling me this, I booted not 1, not 2, but 3 hands doing this yesterday.
