CSGibson
3N. Partner has several ways to show varying degrees of spade strength (2S, 3S, & 4S), so this should be a stopper ask, not a spade raise.
mcphee
4S and hope we make it. I would not take 3D as asking for a stop. I expect a hand worth 19 in support of S
shyams
3NT. Agree with CSGibson
kfay
Agree that this kind of a stopper ask. Partner could double again with only 3 spades if he's still unsure about strain and then cuebid or whatever. So while he probably still has 3 spades, I think my first priority is to show that my hand is also suitable for NT. I can picture quite a few hands where we can get 9 tricks in NT but not 10 tricks in ♠.
gnasher
He can't have a pure stopper ask - he'd have bid 3♦ over 1♦. Not can he have a normal takeout double shape with three spades - he'd have doubled again. One possibility is that he has loads of high cards and five hearts - too strong for a non-foricng 2♥, but not good enough hearts for a jump to 3♥. I think 3♥ is right. If he bids 3♠ over that, I'll bid 4.
gwnn
gnasher makes a lot of sense but in practice partner has 4 spades and a good hand and made a brain fart. I bid 3NT in case he has something else by accident.
aguahombre
Gnash's points about what 3♦ does not mean, are right on. And the conclusion that he has a biggie with 5 hearts is also a logical one. I believe he has 3-5 in the majors because with fewer spades he could have bid 2♥ and shown a lot of strength, and I will bid 4S anyway just in case I am wrong, and he has a 3-4-3-3 monster, somehow didn't choose a second double, and expects me to be 4-4 with a prepared 1S response if I now bid 3♥. Bbradley62
One possibility is that he has loads of high cards and five hearts - too strong for a non-foricng 2♥, but not good enough hearts for a jump to 3♥. What would the strength ranges be for partner to bid 2♥ or 3♥ following his takeout double? Would 3♥ show better hearts than 2♥ does, in addition to more strength? gszeszycki
3N generally speaking if p had 3 spades they would x if they have 4 spades they will convert to spades. If p has less then 3 spades then our most likely game is 3n and we are not only max for our 1s bid but have a dia stopper to boot.
