What do u bid after 1H opener

Recommended Posts

Holding the following hand what do u bid after a 1H opener by RHO?

A10xxx AQ Axx 9xx

(i) Do u bid DBL or 1S or 1NT(15-17 here)?

I bid 1NT then auction continues 1H-1NT-2H-X-p-?

(ii) What do u bid now ? I bid 2S what should it promise 4 spades ?

Opps then bid 4H do u bid 4S or pass to partner to decide?

Thanks for your advice

(i) 1S

(ii) 2S, as you say promising 4S. I play the double there as take-out style (can be passed of course). I don't rate this as good enough for 3S. Likely to be too many duplicated minor suit losers.

(iii) Facts are confusing, but I assume the auction has gone:

1H...1N...2H...X

P.....2S...P.....P

4H...??

If partner cannot make a try over 2S then you are not making game. If you are considering bidding 4S therefore it must be as a sacrifice. No point in sacrificing if they are failing in their contract. I would double. In the remote chance that you do not have 4 tricks in your own hand partner should be able to produce one for his earlier double.

Well - I would bid 1 over 1 - JUST for the reason that 1NT gives you problems IF the auction proceeds as you asked 1 1NT 2 X P -- I just hope that partner meant the X as transfer to BUT I suspect ACOL bidders will not play it that way --- in which case I refer back to the fact that I believe that 1 overcall better

As to the last question I have NO idea what to do :P because I WOULD have bid 1 over 1

Yes it would be silly - I made a typo in the hand it was...

A10xxx ♠ AQ ♥ AKx♣ 9xx♦

doh!

Would it change your answer?

I would never overcall 1NT with a decent 5 card unbid major. If I had 95432 I might lose the 2. In the second had you've described, it seems easy: I double, then I bid spades next time around. With the first hand, I bid 1S.

In all of my regular partnerships, that X of 2H is card showing, closer to PENALTY than take out. I've been known to call it a psyche check, although I don't think raising to 2H with 1 or 2 hearts is really a psyche. Often when I bid 1NT instead of X, it's because their suit is my best suit. The double says if that's the case, let's let them play it. If it isn't the case, then pull.

With the revised hand I would overcall 1NT, then I would bid 3S opposite partner's double of 2H. Having bid 2S I have a bit of a problem over 4H. I reckon that pass should be forcing so I probably pass. With a balanced hand partner will double again. With an unbalanced hand with Heart shortage I reckon that 4H is still failing but bidding 4S will be better. Partner can make that decision. My pass shows a 1N overcall based on less than robust Heart length.
