2, there are too many possibilities of 1 being passed around when game is on (xxx xxxxx Qxx xx). 2NT with this 5-4 without clubs is not very nice either.

In order or preference for me

1. 1S, rebid GF if partner responds

Following options are inferior but not completely crazy

2. 2C, rebid 2S

3. 2C, rebid 2NT but only if we have Puppet Stayman

Really bad: open 2NT. I don't have objection to having 5-card major, but the hand is just otherwise not right for 2NT.

Seems to me if it's not right for 2NT because of shape, it's not right for 2C followed by 2NT either. For me, this is not a NT hand. If I were to open it 2C (which I wouldn't) I would rebid 2S. For me, 1S, followed probably by a 3D JS. If I were playing Romex, I'd open it 1NT.

oh yes, I bid 2C then 2S. This may sound like a contradiction with my prior assessment that this is not a 2 suiter but a bunch of points, but of course it is not really. 2C accurately describes my point range and if our auction becomes crowded, I'm OK with just mentioning my spades. anyway what I was trying to say was that the old adage 'dont open 2C with a 2 suiter' should apply more often to hands with long minors or long hearts rather than long spades.

2C. It's all vul, RHO has passed, so now the chances of partner passing is a bit higher when game could be cold (could be a 4S or 3NT or 4H or 5D game) and also the opponents are unlikely to be preempting like mad. Actually if they do preempt like mad I'm more than happy to defend!

I have survey more than 20 stars here;

majority close to 65 % said 1S more than a few 1S responders DO NOT flaw the 2C ( ie they can go along with it)

somehow when you think about it is 2C is " I have a hand 1 trick short of game "

this is only the 1S opener in standard method. However if you go by " I have much more quick winners than losers" " If i open 1s partner pass onme, I will be sick " then 2C is your choice

btw, the partner had is XXXX JXXXXX K XX at the table I kib this East pass the 1S open by his partner; wich I cud yell him back to bridge school . :P

"I have a hand 1 trick short of game" is a very poor criterion to pick between 2 and not 2.

I like:

-balanced 22+ or equivalent

-if you can imagine a balanced yarborough (a hand with no A K Q J or T) that makes game cold opposite your hand, open it 2♣.

-however, if you can imagine a sequence after you opened 2♣ where you think you should bid 6 over 6 with your hand because you think they might make, you should not open 2♣.

I think the first one is fulfilled.

For the second one I offer

xxxx

xxx

xxx

xxx,

albeit not quite 50%.

The third one is clearly true.

BUT all this talk of criteria is a little bit of nonsense. Bam.

The point is that I think that no matter much much I jump shift and cuebid and everything, I will not be able to convey how many points I have with this hand. Also when I jump shift and cuebid a lot, I would like partner to believe that I have a little more shape than this.

Those were fairly predictable poll results, the modern top-level bridge style is to open 2 clubs only if you absoutely have to, as well as to almost never pass level one suit openings, which works together quite nicely, especially if you adopt some kind of Gazilli-like gadget too.

IMO by far the best feature of 2 clubs opening is that it comes up so rarely.
