Pass. My spade cards rate to be opposite shortness (no X & bid tends to show lack of tolerance for spades), and I have no first round controls to cue-bid, so I'm not sure what intelligent information I can either give or receive by bidding on.

Pass I guess. It's true that RHO is likely to be unbalanced with quite a few clubs (adding ours, which gives the possibility of partner being short) but maybe partner is short in spades like 1732 and didn't want the opponents back in to find the spade fit making the 5 level unsafe we three top black suit losers. I guess it's not likely partner has a 6card suit since we are holding AJ92 but I guess it's possible he might be 1741 like x KQ10xxxx AKJx x. It's possible that if partner has an extra card he might've chosen another action besides 4 so I stick with pass.

East opens 1 - they play a weak no trump and four-card majors.

Two passes to partner, who bids 4. East passes, and you...?

partner has to be bidding some of my cards already and consequently I will do what I recommend in most unilateral action auctions....PASS

Partner may be bidding some of my cards but he is not bidding my AJxx in trump nor is he bidding my very slam suitable diamond stiff (with 4 trump) nor likely that nice chunky spade holding.

I choose 5, blame transfer.

He will know I have a slam suitable hand with no first round side suit control.

I see little risk in this. He thought 4 was a good bid with no idea that I'd have this sort of fit. If we were reasonably safe at the 4 level opposite my usual passed hand holding, we are going to be safe at the 5-level. Meanwhile, he'll bid with controls, which is what we want. I can't recall the last time I saw a triple jump balance, so I'm not going to suggest possible hands for him.....suffice it to repeat: he didn't expect this moose to come down in dummy. If my partner passed this hand, and I saw dummy, I'd be wondering if there were any holding on which he'd bid.

In my partnership 4 would be RKC and 5 looks like it's asking for a club control. Both of those bids make me cringe a little, but not as much as pass. I guess I'd try 4 and bid 6 if partner shows 3. If partner shows 2, oh well. If RKC must be 4NT I can't bid it cause 5 seems like a typical response for when partner has a min for his bid.

I thought andy-h's 1741 hand was a good example hand of what we DON'T want, but it seems awfully pessimistic to me to expect it most of the time. I mean, I would bid 4 with, say, Axx, KQ10xxxx, QJx, - too, and that has a whole bunch of wasted values.

I also don't fully agree with the logic that partner's bid is more likely if he has spade shortness (see previous hand). I would be more inclined to believe LHO has club length instead of spade length given the pass of 1 where more people nowadays stretch to respond to partner's 1 opening without tolerance.
