what bidder? huh. and which opponents?

anyway isnt this double commonly played as a good hand with values in spades?

The bidder who is in turn (Question-marks)

The opponents of that bidder.

That would seem like an obvious possibilety with 2 hcp.

In my methods, the balancing doubler has an opening hand with spade length and/or offshape for immediate takeout double. The 2C bidder of course bids unless he figures that 1NX with an overtrick is cheaper than bidding. The break in tempo by the doubler does not suggest any particular holding; the only thing I an see is uncertainty whether he should balance. I don't see the problem.

Thank you all for your replies.

My ruling ended up along the lines you suggested.

It would probably have done that anyway, but as the ruling was in favour of a close friend, it felt nice to have back-up.

As peachy said, I would take it as a good hand with spade length. Partner's thinking may mean one of:

-he doesn't have that good a hand

-he is thinking about the possibility that I could misinterpret

I am awesome and my partners know that so option 2 is out :(

As partner doesn't really promise support, I would be reluctant to bid 3 here with out without the UI.

Maybe the hurdle suggests that doubler had to think about what agreement they have wrt this double.

Most likely I would let the result stand. OK, if this pair has a clear understanding that it is (say) a penalty double, then partner is under ethical pressure to pass since the hurdle suggests that doubler doesn't hold and ideal hand for a penalty double.
