this hand popped up in a pairs game and the contract reached was a reasonable 6H. The problem in the play came when the opening lead was a trump.

The bidding went this way.

1D 1H

2D 2S

3C 3H

4H 4N

5D 6H

What do we think the best line is?

How about winning in hand, diamond to the Ace and diamond ruff, spade Ace and spade ruff with the Ace, diamond ruff (with the 8 or an honour, depending on the 10 being out already or not) and trumps -1. If no spade honour has come out or KQ of diamonds didn't appear I'll try to guess which spade honour is left alone.

Seems to me that

t1) win in hand

t2) to A

t3)ruff a

t4) to A

t5)lead pitch if that makes sense otherwise ruff and try for 33 split

rates to be higher odds than

t1) win in dummy lead a to Q

t2) ruff a

What about A, ruff, A, run Q ? That works immediately if K is on the left.

If RHO wins and returns a trump, we play for diamonds 3-3

If instead he returns a club, we can choose whether to play for

(a) diamonds 3-3 + trumps 2-2, or

(b) J on the left (and presumaby also either trumps 3=1 or diamonds 3-3, to account for RHO's defence).

I haven't done any detailed calcuations, but I think that's a bit better than Hanoi5's line.

It happens the D are 3-3, not a high percentage. The line of the D ruffing finesse fails if the opps return a C as the trumps happen to be 3-1. It seems best to win H in hand and play AQ S intending to run the Q if not covered. This line is in fact the winning line. I realized I should have gone done against a more skilled defender playing on D as I did.
