the hog
1♠. Is this a trick question? And your rebid is......? 4♠. 1S 1NT 4S. You don't think this is a tad of an overbid? 1S 2m 4S. Really? 4S? (Mind you, this one is not so much of a problem.)
helene_t
I often open 1NT with a 5-card major but this hand has a doubleton in the other major and also it is rather suit-oriented. Besides I think I am weak enough to comfortably pass partner's preference bid:1♠-1NT2♣-2♠pass Not so happy about my rebid if p bids 2♥, though. I guess I would have to bid 2♠ but I hate those catch-all rebids.
Hanoi5
1♠, wtp? If partner 1NTs: 2♣, if partner 2♣: 2♠ (or even 2♦ if I feel creative) and if partner 2♦: 2NT (or 2♠ if I don't feel like playing 3NT).
gwnn
depends on the system. wtp? If I agreed (implicitly or explicitly) to open all 5332 in range 1NT then 1NT. If I didn't then 1S.
hrothgar
1NT. Is this a trick question? I don't have any strong objection to 1N or 1♠ (and I think that I lean more towards 1♠) The hand is aces and spaces, which suggests a suit contract The hand is far from a maximum 1NT opening, so I'm not too worried about an auction like 1♠ - 1N2♣ - 2♠

jdonn
Alert, style poll, no minds to be changed! And obviously if you open 1♠ you will rebid 2♣ over 1NT and hope it works out, which it may or may not. Do we really need to go through this? kfay
Sure it's a style thing, I suppose. I basically always open 15-17 5cM 1NTs but... this hand!! I am not sure.
jdonn
If you "basically always" open 1NT with a 5 card major then open 1NT. A hand that is right in the middle of the 1NT range on value (very good 15 here) is the one that is most likely to be screwed in the later bidding after 1♠ so this hand really doesn't seem like the big exception you have been waiting for. Bbradley62
Playing SAYC, easy 1S-1N-2N or 1S-2x-3N.
Phil
Sorry, 1♠ and this isn't an LOL. - The NT will obviously want to be played from partner's side. - Unless you are overbidding 1N - 2♣ - 2♠ - 2N - 3♠ or 1N - 2♦ - 2♥ - 2N - 3♠, you aren't ever finding a 5-3 spade fit. Only with a weaker partner in a weak game would I open 1N.
Jlall
You think accepting an invite after 1N is overbidding? lol
Jlall
AQJ94 A8 852 A72 1st seat w/w at IMPs Edit: How do you play 1S 1N : 2C 2S : 2N? If you open 1S (which is fine obv) you have to pass 2S in this auction with 15 in my strong opinion. You might miss some 15 opp 9 or 15 opp 10 games that way, but in general bidding 2N will just get you too high. Playing some form of bart as many do would solve this (where partner can show a "bad" 2S bid or a "good" 2S bid).
