How to bid this hand?

Recommended Posts

A friend reported this hand from a social game and wondered if there is a 'scientific' way to bid the Grand Slam?

North. 65, K7, AQ64, AKQ98

South. AJ2, AQJT9, KJ9, 73

Suggestions would be appreciated.

suspect many auctions would be like 1NT-2;2NT-5NT; 6NT or even 1NT-5NT; 6NT

tough...if south is dealer

1h=2c(gf)

2h(6, can be very minimum)=3h(slam try)

4s(rkc)=4nt(0-3)

5d(confirm all kc...KD, grand try)=?

one spade

6h

3d at least...

3 clubs at least

again note 2h shows 6h and can be really minimum.

Apologies - North was the Dealer.   :)  :

even harder if north is:

I will start;

1c=1h

2d=2s(art and game force...9/10+hcp)

3c(deny 3h or 4s often)=?

fwiw I play a pretty old fashion strong reverse style...but given the forum which prefers light reverses....tough.........

1 - 1

2 - 2

3 - 3

4 - 4NT

5 - 5

7/ - 7

2 = Forcing , 5+

3 = 2 card support (often Hx) , no stopper

(We bid 4 or 3 with 3 card support).

3 & 4 = cuebids for (perhaps unnecessary..)

4NT = RKCB 1430

5 = 0/3

5 = asking for Kings,showing all 5KC present , inviting grand(you can use 5NT if you prefer)

7/ = I have a source for tricks and extras - should be enough.

Does it look reasonable, or too optimistic?

no 2h means I have crap

You cannot have 2h means i got great or i got crap

------------

see 2h means i got 5+h and crap...not good.

It is very common in "modern" bidding for

1 - 1

2 - 2

to be played as forcing (for 1 round) , using 2 or 2NT for weak hands.

Yes, you cant stop exactly in 2 (some people would respond 2 on the 1st round with that hand) , but you get much more flexibility with developing your auction, when 2 is forcing.

No real need to get scientific imo.

1 - 1

2 - 2

(something - 3)

something - Blacky

something - K ask

something - 7/NT

Opener shows 18+ without a stopper, so he must have pretty much the rest (especially if you keep asking with 3). Once you know about all Aces and every K except K the grand slam is pretty obvious imo.

in the relay system that I used long ago

1C-1H

1S-3D

3H-4D

4H-5D

5H-5N shows Axx AQxxx Kxx xx without the Q and uncertain jacks and we agreed that 6 level bids are never relays. tough luck, we are in 6NT and it's even wrongsided. oops.

1-1 (same as 1)

2-2 (GF relay asking distribution)

2NT-3 (2245, 3 sets trumps)

4-4NT

5-5NT

at this point north can count 12 tricks A, 6, A and 4 with a likelly 13th in K, finese, J, lucky club break, 7th or K

I think he should blast to 7 althou just showing K might be even better since south is bidding 6 and now maybe 7NT comes into picture.
