Against 2h=short diamonds

Recommended Posts

It's pretty popular among precision players to move the 3-suited 0-1 11-15 opening to 2 instead of 2.

The acbl recommended defense has two treatments which seem dubious to me: 1. playing double as 5+ and an opening hand and 2. playing 3 as a good 3 bid. I would definitely have thought it's much better to play double as takeout of hearts and 3 as natural.

Thoughts?

I agree with their treatment on both points. I think you just have to be able to show hearts (not to mention since you are showing the suit they are currently in they might be in big trouble), and you want to show diamonds so much more than clubs the other part makes sense too. It's a bit annoying there is no way to show balanced 13 or 14 or whatever but credit their method. You just stretch to overcall 2NT or pass then double, and pray.

If they are vulnerable, the double should be semi-penalty or penalty, they have no security whatsoever and will get nailed often enough that they might reconsider opening 1H with 4414 like i do or keeping the original prec 2D.

Non- vul i could go both way, but i prefer penalt-ish style.

I would double with 14 pts and 4H and + and 16 pts with 3H and 18 with 2H. Im using 2NT as a strong multi-suit 3 level bid.
