What will you bid?

Recommended Posts

double.

partner will leave this in with a weak hand and no long suit, and that suits us fine. If he pulls, he has playing strength, even if merely in the form of a 5 card spade suit and a few hcp, and we may do well then.

Passing is out....there is very little chance partner can balance.

Before deciding whether to double or pass, let's get an survey of what action partner will take with the following hands if you double:

1. Qxxx xx xxx Qxxx

2. Qxxx x xxx Qxxxx

3. Qxxxx x xxx Qxxx

4. Qxxxx x xxx Kxxx and so on....

I'm not sure what other will pick. I will bid 4S with all the above hands and as gnasher has shown a perfect example of very good hand by west, game is still far from certain. I am guessing that these types of hand happens more than half of the time (Can someone use some sort of dealing programme to assist the analysis?)

But instead if you pass, you are certain to collect a plus score. And if partner happens to be able to balance (what is your minimum requirement for balancing here?), you will be more than happy to pass with your good holding and flattish hand.

I am a believer in passing with this hand.

I'd pass, which is consistent with my understanding of the term "takeout double". Even if partner has some miracle like QJxxx x xxx Kxxx, we haven't made 4 yet.

We may differ a little on the definition of "takeout double", but we differ a lot on the definition of "miracle".
