gnasher
Yes, barking mad. A concequence of playing wide-range prempts is that you can't save as often as you'd like to. Mind you, I wouldn't want to save on this, even opposite the most disciplined weak jump. Suppose that partner has AQxxxx xxx x xxx. 5♠ is going to cost 500, and they may have been about to misguess clubs and go down.
jjbrr
4♦ lol.
Phil
Why is it when the opponents bid a vulnerable game and we preempt, we automatically assume it makes?
gwnn
Phil? what's with the apostasy? I think 5♠ is bad if you are 100% sure partner has 6 spades and incredibly bad if partner preempts anything like I do in this position (passed partner AND favourable!). Trust your vulnerable opponents  OK that doesn't really apply here, sorry. I just couldn't let it.

aguahombre
I don't think Phil was renouncing his religion...merely questioning it :D
Phil
Sorry - too late for me to renounce my beliefs. (I do find my danging modifier kind of interesting however)

Was East mad to save? If East didn't know the opponents were maniacs no blame just bad luck. If East knew they could bid like this then I would choose East. OleBerg
Quite mad. If he really wanted to bid 5♠ (not my choice, I am closer to 3♠), he should have done it immidiately.

aguahombre
Would you have bid 2S with West hand? ...I would have bid 3S. Hence, Gnasher's comment about wide range preempts is extremely relevent. I would have bid 1S, and would have opened 1S if righty had passed.
