1 5 ?[/hv]

Bite the bullet and bid 6 There are too many minimal opening hands where you make 6. If you bite the dust as a result well that can happen too but I think the odds are in your favor.

5, you know when they overcall 5 things will not be breaking. And why should partner have what we need anyway, it's asking a fair amount. "Stay fixed" is good advice in these situations.

Btw AK A is not automatically slam anyway. Spades will be 4-0 a lot. Partner could have 3 diamonds and be getting overruffed. Partner could be 5413 or 5314 and you lose a club. Maybe he has AK and A of diamonds but hearts don't break and he loses two, or there is a heart ruff. Maybe none of these chances are too frequent but you aren't home free because you find AK A I'm saying.

I found this to be very close, I went back and fourth. One reason I often bid 6S here is because they will save, but in this case if LHO is the one who saves he will always be right, and when he doesn't save it will often be because he has a trick or a stiff diamond. That creates a bad situation for us, but getting them to 7D X is still better than playing 5S if 6 is cold, and it's matchpoints (and of course they won't always save when it's right).

I agree with everything jdonn said about 3 keycards not being enough necessarily. I also wanted to add that even if partner has a doubleton diamond it's not that infrequent that they have 9 of them.

QJxx of spades would just be such a huge improvement here. Meh, I'd probably bid 6.

Was waiting for the "actual full hand" to change, so to prevent giving another wrong answer.

No, I got it right first attempt this time.

At the table I bid 5, over dinner between rounds all the top players said they would bid 6

Absolutely. Many of the early refinements of the 2/1 system were worked out over dinner between sessions back in the old days. And the top players were not pontificating ----it was a give-and-take, where lesser players actually contributed.
