Fluffy
When I see spannish news about NBA they say Pau Gasol is the best player in the world blablabla, all the usual rubish, but when I watch some american press, I find him completelly unmentioned mostly, what is the real truth? is he worth anything? Phil
You're asking a Laker fan about Pau? 28 last night when the Suns chose to double-team Kobe. He's not the best big guy in the NBA, but he fits in very well in LA.

He is okay player, not the best by any means. PS. I watch and follow basketball VERY infrequently. Sort of Lakers fan, if any...

matmat
Here's my take on Pau. he is an excellent, excellent player. He plays hard and has very strong fundamentals, great footwork, is technically sound. He also seems pretty modest and tends not to say stupid stuff when in front of the microphone. NBA fans, and consequently, the NBA media don't care about things like that. They like to see flashy players, high-flying, explosive plays and are always eager for a controversial soundbyte. There is a large number of people, imo, who much prefer college basketball to the NBA, simply because the focus tends to be on team-play and basic skills, rather than high scoring, high-flying trapeze acts. Gerben42
What's the metric for measuring "world's best player"? He is one of the world's best players for sure, but like bridge, basketball is a team sport and you cannot really compare...

It must be that you watch the Lakers more often than others, because I'd say that Nowitzki is a much better known player than Gasol. There career averages are strikingly similar however. The three most cited statistics in Basketball are points, rebounds, and assists. Note that Dirk is a 9-time All Star and Pau is only a 3-time All Star, albeit in a couple fewer seasons. Dirk Nowitzki - PPG 22.9, RPG 8.5, APG 2.79 All Star Games in 12 Seasons with Dallas Pau Gasol - PPG 18.8, RPG 9.0, APG 3.23 All Star Games in 9 Seasons with Memphis and LA Lakers
Phil
All of you can lay down and die on a pile of leaves. What does LA get bashed so much? Oh, and if you want to bash a team, please bash the Clippers. Their owner, Donald Sterling is a tool.
blackshoe
Then perhaps you should bash Sterling, instead of the team. Not that I care either way.
bb79
Gasol + Kobe makes it look easy. he's at his best.he's in top 10 in nba but "best player" is an overbid.
Rodney26
He's an excellent, excellent offensive player. Between his shooting touch, speed for his height and his low post ability, he's very difficult to guard. He has terrific instincts around the cup. He's an above average rebounder. He's not a great defender but he's adequate. Sure fire all-star; arguably the best power forward in the game right now, especially if you call Dirk a 3. It's not a coincidence that the Lakers are on their way to the Finals for the third consecutive time since trading for him. He's probably in the 11-15 range in terms of "best players in the NBA." He can't take over a game like Kobe, LeBron, Wade, Durant, Dirk, or Pierce because his ball handling skills limit him to the interior. I'll be incredibly curious to watch the matchup between PG and KG if the series continue as they have and LA and Boston meet. Garnett's defense in the postseason has been otherworldly, but Pau historically gives him fits.

Winstonm
when will winstonm come to this thread asking for zambonis?I think Pau is too tall for a Zamboni - I think he drives a Lexus.
Fluffy
I think nowitzki even got an MVP season award. There have been a bunch of spaniards in NBA last decade, but most of them are returning home after 1-2 seasons sadly, only Pau Gasol, his brother and Calderon are lasting. But Gasol brothers have yet another younger brother you know? he is suposed to gonna grow 5-10 cm over them, a lot is expected from him. jjbrr
Gasol isn't one of the top 5 forwards in the NBA imo. He just plays on a team with Kobe. I would look good at forward if I had Kobe on my team.

Rodney26
Alphabetically.... AnthonyBryantDurantHowardJamesNashNowitskiPaulWade (hard to argue he's better than anyone in the top 9, but....) BoozerDuncanGarnettGasolS. JacksonJ. JohnsonPierceRondoRoseStoudemireD. Williams It seems to me Pau's very much in the upper half of this next tier as an approximate top 20. It's easy to say that Kobe makes him, but Kobe couldn't take the Lakers to the finals from 05-07 by himself.
Winstonm
Best player in NBA? Top 10 in NBA? lol?!? that's what I am asking, place him somewhere! Gasol is a superstar - it is because he plays with Kobe that he is underappreciated. At 7 feet, he has a lot of the skills of a small forward as far as outside shooting and ability to drive the ball. But he is also a solid rebounder and can go either left or right handed from the low post. The only thing that Pau lacks is bulk, but he makes up for that with quickness and intelligence. He is tougher than most give him credit. I put Gasol in the top 15-20 in the league. I want OKC Thunder to keep Kevin Durant and Westbrook, but I'd trade any two others on the roster for Gasol. jjbrr
Best player in NBA? Top 10 in NBA? lol?!? Maybe he meant top 10 power forwards in the NBA. Gasol is def a top 10 PF!
Jlall
I don't know that much about NBA so take this fwiw but I always considered him about where Rodney said, top 20 but not top 10.
