since partner has 8 tricks and I have 3.5 i will settle for 5

:)

I pass. Playing 3 or defending a major is OK. Game seems unlikely.

So partner doesn't get dealt AKxxxxx or AQJxxxx very often then ?

The problem here is that if partner has the AD, 3N will play OK most of the time, but if he has KQJ it will be horrible most of the time. 5D is unlikely to make although by no means impossible (x, x, KQJxxxx, 109xx type holding).

You're on a coin flip here really, P or 3N look the best bids.

unless you are used to habitually throwing yourself off of a cliff normally at these colors (unfavorable) and scoring (IMPS) you are very cautious with your preempts as the opps tend to get trigger-happy

So is x x KQJ10xxx J10xx a 3D opening for you, red against white at IMPs? If not I would suggest you are preempting too conservatively.

OP hand was AQx Axxx xx AJxx so I can't hold the JTxx but with T98x I seem to have fair chances in 5

3N.

Right with AK-7th, AQ(J) 7th, maybe AJT-7th or AJ-8th, maybe KQ-8th. Wrong with KQJ-7th, QJ-8th. It is also right when pard has an outside King as an entry, which is very possible at these colors.

Frankly unless pard has very skewed shape, no entry, and the 'wrong' suit, is 5 better.
