No interference from the opponents:

1-1

2-2

My partner and I have had a lot of discussion about this auction recently, trying to decide exactly how we want to handle it. Just wanted to see if anyone had a strong preference on what 2 should promise in terms of strength and hand type. Comments welcome. If this has come up before, thread links are welcome.

We play big club, but input on any style welcome.

I have found 1m-1M-2m to be one of the hardest starts to an auction. Part of it is that there is a lot of deviation in what people play here, so if you have not discussed it with partner, it can be disaster.

I have had partners who play this as NF natural, F1 natural, and art GF. I do not know of anybody who plays it as GF nat. Personally, I like nat NF, 2NT as a F1, nat or diamonds inv+, 3C as art GF, and 3D as courtesy raise. This sequence is one reason some people play jumps to 2 major over 1 minor as 5+ spades 4+ hearts hands of various strengths.

My personal preference:

1.

1/1 - 2

5+ 4+, usually 5-9 hcp

2.

1-1

2-2

5+ 4+, INV

3.

1-1

2-2

ART GF

4.

1-1

2-2

F1, covering both 2. and 3., i.e. either INV with majors or any GF.

Opener's 2, 2NT and 3 rebids are to play opposite INV hand; other bids are GF.

Probably not optimum, but usually works pretty well.
