flytoox
Sitting east, you hold:[hv=d=n&v=n&s=s72hqj9dak965cat3]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] North opened 1S, what do you bid? PASS, 2D, or DBL?

mikeh
double. No second choice for me. Too much to pass, not enough in diamonds to warrent such a committal bid as 2♦, hand rates to handle a moysian reasonably well, and hand isn't strong enough to bid 2♦ and then take further action by myself. jdonn
Yes double. I actually don't think it works great but I'm convinced it works soooooo much better than 2♦.

kgr
I would bid 2♦.In my system I would DBL, because 2♦ shows 4c♥ and better ♦.

dake50
Gathering 2D overcall denies H-support. I'm opposite opinion: 2D/2C SHOWS 3xH - else why am I in this auction cheaply and immediately? To find m-fit? And play 4m? 3m? If they S-fit? Scramble into 3-5 Hearts if lucky? Or partner knows 3-5 H-fit and 5xD help suit?

H_KARLUK
Say you have no agreement about doubling one ♠ opening call auto offers 4 pieces ♥ and you doubled as takeout thinking that you can live with a Moysian fit, lefty passed. Your partner bid 1NT. Declarer passed. Now what? In this scenario would you feel yourself comfortable to play any level NT contract or set ♦s as trumps? Double then new suit is 17+ HCP on your system card or not? Which one is suitable for you? Still t/o X of this problem good idea or a simple and natural 2♦ overcall with 14 HCP, denied 4 pieces ♥; maybe a high card of ♠ maybe not. You've 9 tricks in NT contract but before you get it they found best defense and scored 7 tricks. Shucks, laydown 2♦ +1 there. Rotten luck? What a complete joke :D
whereagles
I don't like playing a moysian on QJx of trumps, so I prefer 2♦.

H_KARLUK
Allright Mikeh. if balanced 5 HCP and 3 pieces ♠ confused try this one. Good luck. Who knows as you said they may not find killing ♥ lead vs 1NT. C'est la vie. jdonn
Overcalling 2♦ works fine when partner has Kxx of spades and QJT of diamonds. Worse if he has KJxx of spades and QT of diamonds. Worse if he has KQJTx of spades and x of diamonds. What's the point of an example hand?

awm
Somewhat off track, but supposing you hold the example hand and double, then hear 1NT from partner... do you raise to 2NT? It seems that 3NT is actually decent opposite several of the example hands. Obviously the decision of whether to raise should depend on the range of 1NT, but while I believe this should be something like 6-9 (i.e. same as after an opening), I've heard a lot of people claim that they prefer 8-11 or similar. Won't this hand make game fairly frequently opposite 10-11 points with spades stopped?

I am one of those who advocates a very sound range for 1N, but even I give leeway for partner when the suit is spades, and we are NV so whatever, I wouldn't raise. I do think we will often miss game opposite 10-11 counts though. I would 100 % raise if we had the same hand except 3325 and it went 1D X p 1N p ? Jaja, unique and #1 in solar system. The guys post here are always auto winners of any event, invincible and notable top notch xpertz. Then eventually earn hundred thousand $s in a tourney. How come I forgot, why I do that. Wah wah. Recently I saw an interesting warning label in a market: "wearing a superman costume doesn't enable you to fly." Hehe, I liked that stuff.
