To take action seems a bit out there at first sight but there seems to me to be a case for double. I know I'm mad but is this a manifestation of that madness or just a good call...? jjbrr
I think if you double you will almost always go minus unless partner sits. At least if you pass, sometimes you go plus.
Phil
Just pass please. Lotta 5m competition lately.

Siegmund
Wouldn't be the maddest call I've ever seen. But it IS mostly in hopes of partner leaving it in, not of us finding a decent contract, if you try it.
655321
If double is specifically defined as takeout, rather than values/transferrable values/etc, I think it is worth considering, the goal would seem to be getting partner to bid his long suit and find a cheap w/r save. However, if partner has no long suit there could be trouble, or the save might be a phantom, or not so cheap. If you double and it goes Pass, Pass, Redouble, do you pass or bid 5♥? mikeh
So what do you do when you have a real takeout double? Do you vary the speed of your use of the bidding card, or stand on the table? When players bid with no thought for what partner expects, or when their bidding becomes essentially random, their partners are reduced to tossing coins. Pass....and, if you feel the need to say something (and you shouldn't) you can always say 'I almost bid'
Fluffy
If you double and it goes Pass, Pass, Redouble, do you pass or bid 5♥? I am not very used of redoubles, when I move to top bridge from time to time I find more of them, but at my usual level they are almost non existant. However wtf can possible RHO have for redouble? to be almsot sure he makes 11 tricks he had a more than decent shot at 12 tricks the round before. But again, I am not very experienced on this matter so maybe this is just wrong.

The mikeh who accuses people whose bids he disagrees with of being cheats is new, and I can't help thinking, not an improvement.
the hog
Numeric one, to say he .is accusing people of cheating is drawing an extremely long bow. Silly comment! By the way a pass is totally obvious.

But not to this extent. Are you so thick that you need emoticons on everything???? Want to trade insults? Make my day. When you show up for a battle of wits, try not to come half-armed in future. And, this time, you needn't infer a smilie.
655321
No, not interested in trading insults. And yes, I was thick enough to think that your post implied that anyone considering making a (takeout) double here would necessarily also use black magic. But since I was wrong I am happy to apologise. Sorry.
ggwhiz
I'm certifiable and still pass. Not interested in the look on pards face when she pulls to a 4-3 spade fit with a good hand that would have beat 5d. ps. in my student days, you took off one of your shoes and hammered the table with it if you meant it. mcphee
I am pleased with my defensive contributions to defend 5D. If pass does not suggest a C lead I pass.

Partner's inability to make an X is a bad sign for making anything at the 5 level or higher and while I have 1.5 quick tricks I am inclined to pass and try to beat it.
