With such bad spades, such a great defensive heart holding, and KT9 in the unbid suit, 1N seems like a standout.

WAIT A MINUTE!!! I thought you and Justin were bid 5432 regardless of the other suits and who cares if partner holds 9876 we'll still show our manhood and play in s type guys. B) What happened!!!! Lightning has struck and you've been lit up with sense!

They are of course right your probable double stopper and overall values make 1NT the probable odds on call.

In this sort of situation, I bid notrump unless my hand is good enough to double and then bid notrump over a minimum rebid by partner. So I'd need about 11 hcp to double and be able to bid 2N next. One can get from spades to notrump on such hands far easier than one can get from notrump to spades.

But when, as here, I have a 1 bid hand, opposite a normal minimum, 1N is clear...I am never getting to notrump after a double unless he bids it, and if he bids it, no harm comes from my bidding it first.

This is, of course, a result of the huge suit imbalance, and no-one should take this as an endorsement of a general rule for ignoring 4 spades when holding a stopper (or two).

Do you have a thread to quote or did you make this up in your weird dreamlife?

I don't understand this argument at all, I thought we were bidding 1NT because our spades are so poor and because our hearts and diamonds are so notrumpy. Turns out we are bidding 1NT because we have a 1-bid hand and have to pass partner's 1S, 1NT or 2S if we double.

wow...I read 3 threads in which I posted, and in all 3 you post that you don't understand my points, and criticize my thinking. A han hat-trick! Of course, your comments do more to show that you really don't understand what I wrote than to persuade me that you're right. On this one, for example, did you stop reading or simply turn off your brain before getting to that part of my post where I say 'of course, a result of the huge imbalance' in the major suit holdings? Or do you not understand what those words meant?
