Calling all Meckwells!!

Recommended Posts

if partner's 3s is non forcing, I will pass it. partner knows about the vulnerable game bonus and he honestly expects us to pass his invitations every once in a while.

BTW the fact that I replied should not be interpreted as a claim of equality (or comparability) with Meckwell.

I consider it very close. My first instinct was "4" but after reviewing some generated hands there aren't many good games opposite cards partner don't go to 4 himself.

Very crude simulation attempt (exactly 6, 11-12hcp) gave 41% making for 4 but some of those hands are like 6-5 or 6 -4 or other freaks which are easy 4 from responder.

Overall: very close but still 4. I am not convinced though.

(I assume we open all 11's in this problem ?)

Also my style is to be very tight when inviting and looser when bidding games.

I am in general not very eager to play on 3 level so I am used to facing good hands if partner bid 3 here.

If it is invitational i still would be reluctant to pass with my clean hand so yeah 4 spades it is, also because this sequence is bad for gf hands with spades who must go through 4rth suit. Its forcing in most serious partnerships.

My partner's invite will have a good 11 or 12 on this auction, since my 2D rebid did not suggest I have any spades at all (as opposed to a 1NT rebid where she could be assured of an 8-9 card fit).

Even so, I prefer pass. Pard does not fit my hearts. If my red suit honor disbursement were more in diamonds, this hand might become closer to a 4S bid, but I still would pass.

(edit) SAYC still needs to discuss whether 3S is forcing. I assume that in OP's SAYC it is not, or the question about passing would be "Will you violate your agreements and pass?"

Someone posted ( another board ) quoting last December's Bridge World :

1H - 1S

2D - 2S! = GF for Meckwell

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The author only assumed the following was invitational:

1H - 1S

2D - 3S jump ( 12-12 )

Yes, they play that all NF hands with 6+ are in 1 - 2.

I assume this situation is the same as in standard though.

As MR opens very light I wouldn't be surprised to see many 12's for 3 here.

They stole that from JDONN!!!

Here is that Meckwell hand from the Dec Bridge world.

Note first that the opening was " on the smell of an oily rag" :

Q

KT653

A87652

7

AKJT98654

--

9

A94

1H - 1S

2D - 2S! ( GF )

etc...

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

It was also assumed that the sequence :

1H - 2S-jump = ~ 5 - 9 ( "normally this would be 5-7 ... 9 seems a little high" )

When you play with an unknown there is the chance of this happening especially on this sequence, but that was not the question i guess.

Because the question on the thread should have been: Dare you pass this bidding playing with an unfamiliar partner?
