This is a good example of why it's bad to play 4S shows a 3 card limit raise and 3S denies a 3 card limit raise. Bidding 4S with this hand is just so silly.

Put a spade into the hearts and it becomes a good example of why it sucks to jump-shift into a 3 card suit.

Call me silly, then.

3S = weakest reply, and as little as 2 card , no interest in

4S = 3 card limit raise

Here is a new one that I just thought of

4C! = 3 cards AND 4+ cards ....

[ Edit: I have alternate bids ( not shown) to show acceptance only ]

... but I need to see how this may fit into my SJS reply scheme for these

1M - 1NTF, 3m auctions.

Anyway now I'm going to bid 3S (which I play can contain a 3 card limit raise).

All true. A jump to 4S is really wasteful.

But since 3S does not necessarily guarantee a 3-card limit raise, I don't think we can show 4-card club support, later. If there is follow-up action, my concentration of red suit controls and lack of black suit honors will be the focus --and will confirm the spade fit.

Could you elaborate on how a jump shift into a 3 card suit would work badly if we were 2344 here?

Hi,

3S, we play (which seems to be general consensus), that 3S showes the

limit raise.

I thought that this agreement was non standard, and voted 4C, afterall

we also have a club fit, but of course 4C tells p, that we have 10-12 bal.

hand (or a max. standard 1NT response with good club supp.).

With kind regards

Marlowe

Playing here where 3 club promises 4 clubs (we have semiforcing opening around), I could bid 4 club.

But why should the 4-4 fit be better here then the 5-3 fit in the major?

So a strong 3 is my choice too.

unanimous. if 3 doesnt show this hand, i suggest reconsidering agreements.

I know you didnt mean it but 3 of course doesn't show this hand. But 3 should include this hand as a possibility. Just want to clarify this point since apparently Uwe and Codo think 3 is inherently a strong bid.

No I do not think so, I agree with you and think that 3 can include different hands, but surely it includes the LR for me.

Since there is no other way (after my 1NT bid) to show my fit, I'll have to bid 3 now. There is not enough room to show fit, fit and stopper in the red suits.

I assume that 2m instead of 1NT would have shown a 5 card suit or a stronger hand.

Here is a favorite quote from Februrary ( http://forums.bridgebase.com/index.php?showtopic=37712 ) by Phantomsac ( Justin's [ Jlal's ] alter ego ) pertaining to SJS hands of this type [ Continuations after jump shift ...thread started by bftboy ]:

".....imo by far in bridge the least understood concept is how to bid over a jumpshift."
