Player Names

I am watching team matches from the Norwegian Festival in Trondheim.

Live Vugraphs just from the Open room - but Closed room scores are given. However player names are not given for the Closed room. Is this a difficult problem for the operator or should it be fairly easy for the software? Yellows seem unable to do anything.

Thanks Fred - I thought the software would be able to cope with such a simple task.

It is a pity that either :

the operators do not know about it (and so miss the chance offered by your wonderful BBO software to fully record bridge history)

or perhaps do not have enough support at the tournament to gave them the names for the closed room.

but maybe with just 7 board matches they do not have the time to record four extra names - that I would find difficult to understand.

When, like in the current Norweigan event, only single-table coverage is being undertaken, the vugraph operator needs to set up the presentation as covering "B" for "Both" tables. At an appropriate lull in procedings, the operator can "redeal" to a closed-room board (such as c1, c2, etc.) enter the names in the usual way, and then "redeal" back to an open-room board (such as o1, o2, etc.).

My personal preference is to do this right at the start of the match when the players are going over their pre-alerts, but right after a board is finished is usually OK as you can always catch-up in the auction.

There must be at least one other person involved for the single-table coverage in order to convey the closed-room results to the operator. Presumably that person could also write the closed-room player names on a piece of paper for the operator.

For this event the operator (who is excellent) has had problems with the Closed Room and as a result either Bo or myself has opened the C.R. from the comfort of our living rooms and entered the results as Anne-Lene tells us. We hav listened to what you said Denis, and you should receive your wish today. Ask and ye shal receive......

Unless I'm missing something, this sounds like more work for the operator than if she simply entered the closed room results herself. From the sounds of it, there some "B" c.f. "O" confusion. If you only have an operator at one table, when loading the hand data file, select "B" for "both" to allow the operator to enter results from both tables. As and when a caddy or some other helper hands you a result from the other table, wait until the short break between hands, open the "movie", select "closed room" and type the score in the relevant line.

Doing it the way described above, the operator is typing the closed room result into a messaging program, when she could just as easily type it into "movie" scorecard.

In the series of questions that are asked when loading the hand data file, perhaps it would be less confusing to first ask "Is there an operator at the other table?" and if (and only if) the answer is "yes" then ask "Are you covering the Open room or Closed room?".
