Sweden will have Fredin-Fallenius playing and Poland Balicki-Zmudzinski, thats some better news for the fans.

jvage
Can somebody explain me how this comes? Helgemo, Helness and other members of the teams that won WC and EC in recent years missing? Some of the players have turned down an offer to play this year. This was quite expected for some (like Grøtheim - Tundal) who have other obligations (job/family) and have said early they don't have time to go to all the championships, including the preparations that is needed. This may have influenced the decision from the professionals Helgemo - Helness, who after representing in almost all championships for 20 years have also taken a break. The "new" players are also very strong, but got a little less experience at this level. They all got some international experience however and deserved a chance to represent when there was an opening. They have all produced excellent results in the top Norwegian championships. I heard, that they will add another pair, either Kwiecien-Jagniewski or Kalita-Kotorowicz but not sure about that Correct. They will be adding one of the two pairs after a practise match against the Netherlands on April 23-25. The two Polish pairs will team up with two pairs from Israel, Barel-Zack and Ginossar-Pachtman, already selected for the European Championships alongside the Herbst brothers. That match will be broadcast on BBO (schedule not listed yet). Roland

Any comments from Italian forum members about this? The answer (I think) is very simple, Fantoni-Nunes ain't playing for Lavazza, they are now in Zimmerman's team. HedyG
you can find all registered teams here: http://www.eurobridge.org/competitions/10O...articipants.asp as for Fantoni/Nunes not playing for Italy, Mrs Lavazza decides who plays on the team. there are no selections in Italy. Fantoni/Nunes play for Zimmermann on the Transnational Team when available only. priority has always been playing on the national team. Gerardo
IIRC, Lavazza have issues with Fantoni-Nunes since they lost BB QFs with South Africa, in 2007.

Source: www.imp-bridge.nlIf we have (B+Z)x3=surely :) ...but we haven't so I think, to fight the BB spot back will be primarily and realistic goal for the team, maybe there will be chance for bronze medal, who knows. The first 8 teams in Europe got closer and closer in last couple of years, I expect a very tough competition, same like at the last Europeans. mike777
side question... do many...most european countries, for this event, pick the players....rather than open, I mean really open, team trails?................ I mean assume I am a citizen of our country and a dues paying member of our bridge country......can I get a team and play in our open trials..... as a dues paying member???
Tomi2
it depends, every federation has other rules how to pick their team, some run open trials open for everybody, some have some trials to creat a pool of candidates and pick 3 of them, some create a pool of players and play trials to get the 3 best and some just pick 3 pairs and send them... Often this way will be change in a federation from way A to B when the team selected via A was not successfull. When Italy this year will not gain a BB spot, lots of italians will ask "did Mrs. Lavazza really pick the best" and maybe we will see some Italian trials again. Then again Poland did not play that well in the last Championships. Their best pair, for several reasons, did not participate in the trials and they have started just selecting the team this time.
