I think that's right,

2-4-2-5 is not a good shape for 1NT. 4333, 4432 or 5332(5-card minor) are, IMO, fairly standard.

A better sequence, I am not saying the best, is:

1C-1D-1H-3NT

3Nt is a fine contract at any form of scoring, and definitely the best at IMPS.

If you methods allow 4-way xfers, as a responder I would try first a transfer to diamonds to see whether opener superaccepts: if you find a diamond fit, the potential for diamonds slam allows to investigate further.

If no superaccept, 3NT seems the normal contract.

2 balanced hands with maximum 30 HCP combined usually have not much chance for slam. Because of the 3-3, a poor lead and poor discarding you get extra tricks... Imo maximum tricks you should get is 11, so 3NT is the best contract anyway.

1N-3N

Give me a sixth diamond or a stiff, and I'll transfer and make a slam try. In spite of the great controls, the 5332 is a turnoff with a marginal hand.

How on earth did you make 13 tricks? Maybe with these opponents you should have made a slam try

4th highest from KJxx stands out as a bad lead,

Presumably East discarded a on dummy's s!

That gives 5 , 4 , 2 and 1

I don't see #13...

Perhaps the main BIL lesson on this hand is the importance of communication in defence?

What should the defence discard on the 4th ? A from East, a from West?

What should be discarded on the 5th ?

Even if you tell me we are getting five diamond tricks I do not want to be in slam.

One of the skills that you need to learn if you want to improve is the discernment to recognize a good contract independent of the result that you actually obtained.

I know that there is a saying that a making slam is a good slam but ...

... there are good and even great contracts that fail and there are poor contracts that succeed.

For long term success you want to get to the great ones that fail and avoid the poor ones that succeed. Short term this doesn't always seem fair and reasonable.

Of course getting lucky occasionally won't hinder your scores.
