Position I haven't seen recently

Recommended Posts

Nothing that special. Just thought this was somewhat interesting.

You end up in 2 after the following sequence:

1NT-P-2-P-

2-X-P-2-

all pass.

The spade "fit" is:

DUMMY: A9xx

DECLARER: Jxx

There are no other spots worth mentioning.

Assume transportation to not be an issue (it wasn't).

What different ways to play this suit are available? What do you opt for? any other options considered strongly?

Small towards the J, cash the ace, lead towards 9x.

Seems to hold losers to 2 on any 3-3 break, and any non small doubleton on your right.

It's not 100% clear what is best if the K or Q appears immediately though, I'm inclined to lead small off the deck again, and if the K has flown in from K10x I might be about to look very stupid.

The line I saw, as another alternative, was to lead to or lead the spade Jack, whichever is required by the play, ducking if LHO covers (because of possible problems of the opponents pulling the entire trump suit, which might be bad).

Then, if maintaining control is important, just ducking a spade all the way around at the second round of the suit.

When you then get back in, leading toward A9.

The upside to that line, possibly not mathematically right but possibly situational, is that you can handle the KQx from Opener without a problem, but you also can best handle KQxx from Opener. If it is KQxx, then the 10 is forced out this way, and you can then hook the 9. If KQ10x, this won't happen, but then you end up winning the third round and leaving their boss trump out, but you with one also, in such a way as to enable you to run your suit, rather than them theirs.

This control-the-suit concern is coupled with something very similar to an intrafinesse in a kind of cute manner.
